Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues but the parent of all others.~~Cicero
At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us. ~~Albert Schweitzer
Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings. ~~William Arthur Ward
Gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart and not in the mind. ~~Lionel Hampton

Curled up in the nook
in our Maui Room.
'Ka Moe Lumi' -
the dream room
in front of the fire.
The room, which for the past year
has resembled a consignment shop
that was violently ill, was now
clean, emptied of the kitchen
detritus scavenged through for pots or pans
or a baking dish for the last twelve months
leaving us the freedom, the delight,
the necessity of a fire
to warm our toes, our hearts, and our home.
The kitchen isn't quite finished
yet. And our living room is naught
but another area needing to be found,
but for now--
we bask, we lounge, we relax, we unwind
in front of the fire, talking of any-and-everything
not remodel-related.
I am deliriously happy.
Expressing these feelings to my hubby, we talk of little things. How much we've missed the routines of keeping the fire going, of my playing 'Carlton' as I open the sliding glass door to the woodpile, of commenting things like, "That's a purty fire, Pa' or 'Look at that blue flame snaking up the side of the wood.' Other 'little' things like a companionable silence or just being blanketed in simply being happy.
We talk of the Christmas tree going up and how much we missed it last year. He brings me a cup of coffee and we sit there, sipping away and speaking of memories that swirl in our dream room or Ka Moe Lumi. We giggle (yet again) about how his nickname, Moe, means dream in Hawaiian. The pooch joins us, wanting attention before oozing down, half on, half off his lap. Something else we've missed. Little things. Important things.
~*~
Isolated moments of peace and giggles are equally important in writing about relationships between characters. They deserve to have moments like these as well. Sometimes, writers get so involved in the 'big' picture of their story, they forget (?) or neglect (?) to include the simple moments, the little things that fuel us as people. For our characters to 'be real', we must include the moments. These, as in real-life, become the memories that are every bit (if not more) as important as the big trip or birth of a child. These moments are the ones that keep us going, keep us growing forward.

Quick-Quill writes: Fyn, I love this NL. It's a great reminder. I've come a long way and I owe my beginning to Wdc. What I learned all those years ago and the message repeated over the years keeps me in line as I attempt to put out a new novel.
So glad you enjoyed it!
SpiderGal says: Agreed! It's never too late. There are many times when I feel like I should just give it up. However, giving up would feel worse than hitting the occasional bump in the road of doubt. Thank you for sharing!
