Letter from the editor

As we approach the end of a year, it's customary to take stock of what we accomplished or didn't accomplish in that year. Some of us set lofty goals designed to stretch our writing abilities; others take a more sensible stance that allows reasonable expectations to be met. Perhaps we look back in order to look forward to the coming new year setting more lofty goals.

There are so many aspects to Writing.Com that none of us should have any shortage of potential goals. I'd say most of us joined WDC because we wanted to write, and therefore writing figure prominently in our goal setting. If the many contests aren't enough to keep your writing on track, consider participating in one of the more structured writing forums. For example, "I Write in 2025Open in new Window. encourages writing new items each week along with a reviewing component that will keep you on your toes.

Other folks may want to increase their standing in the community by pursuing various forms of Community Recognition via entering contests, making donations, or completing requirements for four Achievement Consistency merit badges. The consistency awards were introduced in January 2024. Assuming an unbroken streak for each MB throughout the year, would net approximately 200-plus total consistency MBs for the year.

Others may wish to improve their reviewing skills. I submit this will also help your personal writing skills at the same time. Reviewing can be very lucrative in terms of earning Gift Points that may be used to purchase memberships, donate to worthy WDC charities, and so on. Check out "Incentives For ReviewingOpen in new Window..

Looking back to see where you've been and how you've done is good. But looking forward and planning what you hope to accomplish in the coming year is essential to enhancing your writing journey. Now's the time to set your goals for 2025.

If you have a paid WDC membership, consider entering the "Dear Me: Official WDC ContestOpen in new Window.. This contest only happens in January and is one of the most popular, often bringing in more than 80 entries. Other official WDC contests generally boast fewer than 20 entries. While any member can write a Dear Me letter, only paid members can submit to the official contest. The advantage of creating such a letter is to focus an individual's anticipated writing journey for the coming year.

So, did you have a good year for your writing? Or, did you just slide by? Now's the time to take stock and decide what 2025 will look like on your writing journey. Best of luck with all your writing endeavors.

I used to include a section in each Noticing Newbies newsletter that I called An Upgrade Moment. I'll start that again in January's newsletter.

In that section I'll highlight a feature available only to paid members at various levels. With so many nooks, crannies, and features available to members, one can hardly comprehend everything. Even older members can't track all the changes WDC has undergone over the past several years. *Wink* Most features are explained in "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window., and are marked with a symbol indicating to which membership level the feature applies. You may see something you didn't know existed, or something you might want to try.
