Cars: A Vehicle For Humor

I'm not feeling like writing anything amusing today. Honestly, it takes an extra bit of inspiration and effort to write humor (at least it does for me), and I'm just not feeling it today. Don't be concerned, this is perfectly normal, probably more normal than writing comedy. I could probably keep a therapist very busy trying to figure out why I need to write humor in the first place.

I wanted to write about other people's comedy and the radio show Car Talk came to mind. If you are not familiar with this show, it might be because it is no longer a current show, or maybe the title was not enticing (if you aren't into cars), or maybe you never stumbled upon it, like I did. The show ran for 35 years (until 2012) when the two brothers who hosted it retired. The hosts called themselves Click and Clack The Tapper Brothers, although their real names were Ray and Tom Magliozzi.

I am not "into" cars, not really. But the Magliozzi brothers were, and they were very funny guys. They had people call into shows with their car questions (everything from what kind of car should I buy to why is my car making this buzzing sound when I drive above 55 miles per hour?).

That may not sound funny so far, but it wasn't what was being discussed it was was how it was discussed. The brothers knew how to inject tons of humor into their interactions with the callers and each other.

Did I learn anything about cars and car repair from listening to the show? Probably not. I did enjoy it, though, laughing right alongside the hosts. They cracked themselves up and their laughter was contagious.

Above all, I admired their ability to be spontaneously funny and I miss their weekly laughs. This is the digital age, so of course you can still catch The Best of Car Talk on the NPR App, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Audible, and Amazon Music (according to Google).

Here is some feedback from my last Comedy Newsletter "For The Sake of ArgumentOpen in new Window.

Thank goodness! I thought I was the only one whose established characters keep telling me "they wouldn't do that."
I suppose that is what is meant by the term "character driven". Sometimes I am happy being a passenger princess, but occasionally I like to drive! One of these days my characters might let me.

It sounds like your characters know their character sketches. Do you?
{b}Clearly, I do not. That is part of the fun of being a pantser.
