Letter from the editor

As we begin another new year, please consider just how far we are into 2025 with the posting of this newsletter issue. Fully three weeks have already passed, and if you're like me, you're wondering where the time has gone.

Perhaps this month like no other, Facebook, and the Internet in general, is full of notes, witticisms and lists to help you achieve whatever goals you have for 2025. Perhaps one of your fellow members has posted food for thought regarding goals on the Newsfeed.

Wherever you get your ideas from, the biggest question is: Will you follow through with your goals for 2025?

As a paid member of WDC, I'm eligible to enter WDC's official "Dear Me" contest, which is held only in January each year. Other official WDC contests are held each month throughout the year with a different topic or subject each month. Paid members are able to enter with a chance to win $100, $50, or $25 for 1st, 2nd or 3rd places, respectively.

But the "Dear Me" contest is special to many members. It easily attracts the most entries, sometimes three to four times the number of entrants as in the other official monthly contests. And why not--it's natural to take stock of what you want to accomplish and where you want to be in the near and distant future. Everyone here has writing goals. Why not write them down in letter format and submit it to this contest?

Outlining your desires is the first step toward achieving your goals. A goal that is not written down is just a wish. And wishful thinking is just a whisper in the wind, a thought consigned to blow wherever that wind blows. Writing down goals keeps you focused. The biggest lie you'll tell yourself: "I don't need to write this down. I'll remember it."

You don't need to set lofty goals. Start small and achieve those goals. "Read one chapter a day." "Start each day by writing just 15 minutes." Or, do anything that furthers your writing endeavors.

Or, you could lie to yourself. "I'm too busy." "I don't have a place in which to write." "I'm not good enough."

Time is passing by quickly. Don't wait any longer. Decide on a few succinct goals and write them down. Only you control your writing destiny.

An Upgrade Moment

Each issue I write will highlight a feature available only to paid members at various levels. With so many nooks, crannies, and features available to members, one can hardly comprehend everything. Even older members can't track all the changes WDC has undergone over the past two years. *Wink* Most are explained in "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window., and are marked with a symbol indicating to which membership level the feature applies. You may see something you didn't know existed, or something you just haven't tried before.

You can compare all the features available to a given membership level at "Compare Free and Paid Membership BenefitsOpen in new Window..

As I mentioned earlier in this newsletter, one needs to have a paid membership to enter any of the official WDC contests. For as little as $14.95, you might earn $100.00 with your writing--more if you enter contests over several months.

Some of the monthly contests have as few as ten entries making your chances of winning about one in three. What are you waiting for?

Ask & Answer

Thanks for spending time with me today. At the bottom of every newsletter is a section entitled:

*Bullet* *Bullet* *Bullet* Don't Be Shy! Write Into This Newsletter! *Bullet* *Bullet* *Bullet*

followed by a text box. If you liked what you read (or if you didn't), please take time and drop me a line. I'd love to hear your ideas.

From the Newsfeed:

From Louis Williams Author Icon: I released my first book! Sold it under my own name, even. I didn't sell alot, but I sold some, so I'm happy.

From Token-Jester Author Icon: I got a lot of scripting done. I write stories, then convert them to comic scripts and draw them as comics. I have several good scripts ready to be drawn for the new year.

         Congratulations to you both!

From Tannus Author Icon: I did. It was not a big goal, but I made it happen.

Little achievements lead to big wins.

From tj wanderlust-words-in-motion Author Icon: My journey? I think I missed the bus...

I think I got off the bus in the middle of the journey.

From Ms. TerrifyingTuber Author Icon: I don't know. Writing goals not at all. Gaining controll of my reactions to emotions; I made some progress. Weight loss, not so much.

I can't tell if it's because I lack willpower or because I live for my family.(They're all social but mostly sedentary and like to eat out. Since I like spending time with them, mostly, I do whatever they're doing.) I just haven't done so well.

I did manage to do okay for I Write 2024 though.

Remember, little wins are important. They're a great steppingstone to bigger things.

From Mousethyme Author Icon: Of course not. I accomplished 7500 words during NaNoWriMo. Pitiful I know. I also planned on finishing at least one of my Christmas stories this season (I have two in the works) but that also fell by the wayside. I refuse to set any new year's resolutions other than simply to have more content days than not in 2025. I doubt I'll even accomplish that ....

I've been where you are. I decided to just write for myself and my own enjoyment. I stopped worrying about what others thought. And I found my way back to more enjoyment. And 7500 words is nothing to scoff at.

From Jaycin Alexis Author Icon: Haha! No. My goal was to get a book completed. Beginning, middle and end. I keep getting stuck on the beginning.

Does this mean you have an ending? I'm told that's the hard part.
