Community Involvement

Everyone here obviously joined this site with the intention to write, read, and get feedback on their writing. It's called Writing.Com after all.

However, over the years, this site has also become a community of people from all over the world who choose to spend time together not just worrying about comma placement and turns of phrase. The site has become a community in which anyone can find someone to commiserate with about almost any part of life outside of writing.

Being successful at writing creatively doesn't have to be an isolating experience. It's entirely possible to virtually hang out with friends here and then also discuss writing.

Of course, the nature of the site is such that all of our communication is largely written. Some communicate via posting videos that they found. Others have made the effort and met in the "real" world. Those are not the norm. But we all can be a big, fun, friendly, open-minded group of people who cheer each other on across all aspects of life.

One easy place to get started is The Newsfeed  Open in new Window.. There is always something going on. Jokes, life stories, personal wins, and sometimes sadness. Getting involved on the Newsfeed can help forge new friendships and spawn new writing.

"Writing.Com General DiscussionOpen in new Window. is a great place to meet new members and old alike. The forum sometimes goes dormant for a few days, but there's always going to be someone who will reply to a newly started discussion.

Give some of these a try. I've met people through activities that have become friends in writing and life.

Ask & Answer

Replies to my last Contests & Activities newsletter "Winning Every Seven DaysOpen in new Window. that asked: Have you collected all of the Achievement Merit Badges?

Elisa, Stik of Clubs Author Icon wrote: "I've seen several people joke on the Newsfeed that they will never get the reviewing seven days in a row Achievement Merit Badge.

It's not that hard!"

I feel like this assumes everyone reviews the sane way and is similarly brief. I am not and never have been. I have a fairly long list of pieces I want to review, and all of those reviews will take a fair amount of time to complete, time I could spend working on other projects. After all, when I review, I go in-depth and offer full paragraphs on quoted sections. Sometimes one review will take me three hours. When I have photos to sort/edit; contest judging to complete; or advisory board minutes to type, reviewing kinda has to be set aside for a while. I'd rather set it aside for when I have the time to do it to my standards that crank out quick reviews for a merit badge.

In other words, I was not joking about not earning a reviewing streak merit badge.
