Last weekend was lovely. The sun was out; the temperature pleasant. It wasn’t quite warm yet – around 16 °C/ 61 °F – but for a glorious couple of days I didn’t need my winter coat, and it felt great. My husband and I took the opportunity to put up our new shed. We took an evening stroll and saw hares, and pheasants, and toads. It was as though the world was coming back to life, and so was my spirit.
I don’t mind the winter season, as such. It’s a great time for indoor projects. This past winter I got into Lego and I enjoyed curling up with physical novels, rather than mostly just reading online fanfics. It was a grey and gloomy winter, though. A lot of rain, and hardly any sun. After a while that made me feel sad that humans aren’t a hibernating species. Wouldn’t it be easier that way? We could fatten up without any guilt and spend most of the season simply existing, without worry or frustration about yet another dreary day. Unfortunately, we do have to face whatever is thrown at us. I confess that I long for an end to this particular winter; I am ready for spring, even if it comes with spiders and midges.
It’s not happening yet. Not over here. We’re back to frosty temperatures, dropping as low as -9 °C/ 15.8 °F on my birthday. I had plans to go out for the day. Visit a castle, with beautiful grounds, a lake, a tea shop and a plant nursery. That’ll have to wait a little longer – it’s back to the indoors. Thankfully, I’ll be getting more books and Lego!
I know I’m not the only person whose mood changes with the seasons. There is much joy to be found in Earth’s renewal – who doesn’t smile when the first snowdrops delicately grace the grass, and the scent of blossoms fills the air? Who doesn’t laugh at the antics of a bouncing lamb, or feels blessed when a swallow nests under one’s eaves? Whilst I am fortunate to have good winter clothes, it is wonderful to feel the sun on my bare arms. I’m already planning some days out – the castle, as said, and the wild goats, and the kite feeding place. There’s a town not too far away renowned for its bookshops, so that’s worth a visit. And there’s a museum filled with gems and fossils just waiting to be explored!
No more hiding indoors. No more sheltering from the elements. Not until the weather turns too hot and I have to rely on fans and ice water to get through the day. Fortunately, we don’t tend to have a lengthy hot season here in Scotland. I find the heat even worse than the cold.
It is often said that our circle of life is like the four seasons: we enter the world in spring, taking our first steps and exploring the world around us. We mature during summer, whilst autumn sees us slow down a little and turns our hair grey. And winter, those are our final years when we must come to terms with our mortality and make peace with what comes after. I guess that I am entering my autumnal years, but I am not yet ready to embrace them. I want to still look at the world like a new-born foal, feeling filled with wonder when I gaze at a meadow full of endless possibility.
It is also said that as humans we go through spiritual seasons: a wilderness season, in which we feel spiritually isolated and far from God; a growing season, in which we are called on to do things we have never done before and may even feel impossible; a pruning season, in which we are stripped of those things which are not to our benefit, and a harvest season when we will experience the rewards for our good works and faithfulness. I think that I am currently learning and growing, though some pruning is taking place as well. I have come to realise I have developed some less-than-beneficial habits over the years. Just as hail may fall in April, I guess seasons aren’t set in stone. Life is complex, and we humans are a good example of this.
Not that my cats are any less thrilled at the cold turn the weather’s taking. They don’t enjoy the frosty temperatures any more than I do. Let us hope that we can soon say that spring has sprung… or, if you live in the Southern Hemisphere, may you have a delightful autumn!
