According to Wikipedia, Poetry (from the Greek word poiesis, "making") is a form of literary art that uses aesthetic and often rhythmic qualities of language to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, literal or surface-level meanings. Thank you for reading this NL. |

The Color of Noise
Many writers agree that to write consistently, you need a solid place that you can concentrate and relax. But is that enough? Peaceful is great, and I like quiet, but not necessarily for writing. It's tough. I don't want silence but music can actually affect my writing - leak into it altering the plot. There was a paper published in the Journal of Consumer Research that showed while high levels of noise impair thinking, a consistent, low level of ambient noise can increase creativity. (You can read it here if you'd like.) I am a fan of ambient noise and have used it (or things like it) for several years. I have used it while writing but also while I'm at work when there is distracting noise or loud talk going on. I find it helps me focus much easier on whatever task I'm trying to complete. My favorite is one called Rainy Mood which is ironic since I really don't like storms. Do you utilize apps and websites to fill your mind with sound? Try it! You may find yourself inspired!
Types of ambient noise:
Pink noise - similar to white noise only lower frequency.
Red (Brownian) noise - a deeper sound usually compared to waterfalls.
Blue noise - a higher level of white noise, usually compared to a hiss.
Violet noise - a high-pitched whistle that is usually experienced by people with tinnitus.
White noise - the most common is an equal blend of high and low frequencies.
Here is a handful of places to experience different types of ambient noise to get you started:

Editor's Picks](https://shop.Writing.Com/main/trans.gif)
My editor picks this month are from two popular poetry contests. Enjoy!
"Paradox" by ßlυҽყҽʐ
If a sheet of blank white paper
defines my hungry mind
then a book of facts and figures
should fill my head just fine.
"The Braindead Blues" by Dave Ryan
I'm afraid this week's entry is crap—
something inside my mind has gone snap.
I don't have the first clue
about what I should do,
so I'll bale out and shut my damn yap.
"Pathological" by Jeff
A little fib here,
A couple falsehoods there.
Fabrications and falsities frame
my every sentence and story.
"Ode To The Earth" [E] by Dave
Oceans covered with debris
discharged through gross debauchery,
endangering natural synergy.
"Sundowning" by Brian K Compton
echoes linger, soft, low.
faces drift, softly go.
laughter ringing, sunset gleams.
fragile, memory of life’s dreams.
"Repair" by Kit
In the quiet of the countryside,
were owls and bats in twilight glide,
and hares in moonlight softly play,
I find my heart, though worn, can say:
and two more I liked, just because!
"Sometimes Nature Wins" [E] by Dan I Am
I swear I saw those pesky weeds
aiming where they scattered their seeds.
Filling in where there were none.
Missing no spot - not a one.
"Hearts On The Street" [18+] by 🌖 HuntersMoon
Kaleidoscopic lights of red, amber, and white
reveal the dingy streets and illuminate the night.
The slowly passing men look on a pasted smiling face
but cannot see her eyes that track her fall from grace.
