Letter from the editor

A Welcoming Environment

Newbie: a new member on Writing.Com who created their account within the last 31 days. However, considering the vastness of this site and its many official contests, activities, and offerings - along with those created and hosted by members - there is a lot to see and do. Most activity hosts consider members who've been on this site for less than six months, sometimes less than one year, as Newbies. Not as a sign of disrespect, but in recognition of the learning curve and extra patience and encouragement recent arrivals deserve.

As a moderator and activity host, I receive the occasional email asking me for help. I try my best to either explain or to redirect the new member to one of the site resources.

Two of the very best tutorials that are concise and chock full of information are:
*Bullet* the emails that every new member receives
*Bullet* "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window.

Sometimes, Newbies are quite overwhelmed with the many things that there are to do, so their question can feel way too broad to answer. It's important to first try to understand what the question really is. Obviously, there are the tutorials that already exist, but just how it's impossible to answer with actionable advice to "I am so lost." it's also not helpful to simply refer to the whole "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window. book.

If a Newbie asks for your help, it's because they saw you somewhere on the site. You posted something to the Newsfeed. Or you wrote an item in the genre that the new member enjoys reading. They have singled you out as an important person and they are comfortable asking. Take a minute to understand where they are in their Writing.Com journey. With that information, you can either direct them to the exact resource that will help them, or maybe you even have the answer yourself.

Who are they, the newbies who jump into everything the site has in store, and how can seasoned members support them?
