Letter from the editor

The holidays are a great time of year to write a mystery. Christians celebrate the mystery of Christ’s birth, while the Jewish people wonder at the miracle of Hanukkah when one tiny vessel of blessed oil for lamps in the temple lasted a whole eight nights.

Winter itself can be mysterious. In some parts of the world, winter means a white on white landscape or a time of endless night. Winter weather moves people indoors and in close vicinity to each other, forcing an intimacy that may not be welcomed.

Winter and the winter holidays can be just the setting and background you can use for your next mystery story. Imagine all the relatives join together for a Christmas party. During the party, intrigue and old wounds are opened up over eggnog and holiday punch. Suddenly the matriarch of the family keels over and dies. Was it too much excitement? Or did nephew Bill slip some lethal poison in her glass? Of course, your heroine detective is there to be in on the action. She was invited to the party as the date of Bill!

Most of this month’s picks are holiday or winter mysteries. Please enjoy them and remember to read and review. I wish you all the best and hope your holiday season is a peaceful one, and not too mysterious.
