Letter from the editor

*Gift4* CREATING A DRAMATIC CHARACTER

I know this subject has been touched on a lot, but creating the perfect character(s) for your story is really important.

I think a dramatic character should make the reader feel and keep the reader's attention. A few emotions that are good for your character to evoke include love, sympathy, hate and jealousy.

Aim for creating a character that your reader secretly imagines being. Or maybe one that they feel like they have or want to be standing in their shoes, doing as they are doing.

Create a character that will draw in your audience; a character that has issues that arise from the story's dramatic purpose and the story's events compel them to resolve it.

Creating such characters is an art in the craft of storytelling.

Drama... Yes it surrounds us all and I think that we look for drama elsewhere as a distraction from our own. I know I do. I have enough drama in my life for at least ten people. I'm always grateful to know there are others out there with their own drama. It's almost conforting.

Actually, it's not so much that I try to keep "drama" out of my daily life. I would be thrilled if I was the dramatic star of my life. But I always have to play some bit part which usually involves listening sympathetically to the OTHER character's dramatic problem. *Smile*
