Letter from the editor

When I was working in a bookstore, I came across the most interesting writing book. It’s title is Writing The Wave by Elizabeth Ayres. In it, she takes the would-be writer through quit little writing exercises to help get their creativity flowing. I thought, with this being my first newsletter of the new year, I would ask you to join me as I rediscover the “inspired rides for aspiring writers” found within it’s pages. (For those of you that would truly like to follow along in the book, you can probably find it either online or in your area bookstore. The ISBN is 0-399-52577-7)

Jumping In
Chapter 1- Monsters of the Deep- Write Your Way Past Your Fears

The feeling that you are wasting time when you’re writing is very common…

~List 3 times in your life when “wasting time” turned out to be fruitful
~List 3 kind of activities where “rushing into things” is a bad idea

The exercises here are designed to teach you how to answer with a resounding “yes” when you are asked “Will you share with the world what you know?”…

~List 5 “real writers” and for each, a reason why you do and why you don’t want to be like him or her.

The exercise will help you let go of your plans, your agendas, your expectations…

~List 5 sentences that begin “My writing’s no good because…
~ Now cross out every one with a thick black ink or pretty colored pens.

If you find cleaning your oven is better than facing a blank page…

~List 10 ways you procrastinate about writing instead of writing past the wall.
~Now, for each item, list a reason why writing is a more pleasurable and life-enhancing activity.

Good writing is an act of self-sacrificing love…

~List 5 really terrible things that might happen once Something Else takes over your writing.
~Now list 5 really great things that might happen once Something Else takes over your writing.

You have now completed Chapter 1
Thanks for joining me as I begin again “Writing the Wave”

Mandik
