About This Newsletter

Spirituality is defined as getting to know one's inner spirit or soul - the real you.

My name is Melissa is fashionably late! Author Icon and I am your guest editor for this week's spirituality newsletter!

Letter from the editor

Many people think that being spiritual involves a lot of religion, church attendance, and Bible reading sessions. While this may be a part of what makes a person spiritual, the act of being a spiritual person encompasses so much more. A person can attend church service everyday of his or her life and still not know him or herself.

What does it take to become a spiritual person? Many people think that they have become spiritual through personal meditation, therapy, and/or practicing religion. Whatever it is that you think makes you spiritual is probably only the tip of the iceberg.

Spirituality is the discovery of one's deeper self that frees us from many of the fears that plague us unnecessarily. We develop an inner peace, a sense of security that doesn't depend on circumstances or events occuring in the world around us. This security makes us less self-centered, less needy of others' approval, less materialistic, less in need of social status, and altogether happier and healthier human beings. Many people call this self-liberation.

Many religious teachings also say that coming to know oneself is also getting to know God. If God is the essense of all creation, then He is the essense of every person and creature. This is why the search to discover the nature of one's innermost essense is considered the search for God by many.

Can you be spiritual without believing in God or a higher power? Yes. Can you believe in God or another higher power and not be spiritual? Yes. It's not how you worship that makes you a spiritual person. It's how well you know yourself.
