Techniques on improving your poetry are plentiful. All you have to do is a simple web search for poetry exercises and well over a million web pages are returned to you in a fraction of a second. I didn’t do that. I picked up the book Poetry for Dummies by John Timpane, Ph.D. with Maureen Watts and turned to Chapter 11. I hope you like what I adapted from it.

21 Days of Poetry Challenge
Last night while sitting at the computer, we lost power. It wasn’t storming and I had paid the bill, so I wasn’t sure of the cause. I groped through the dark until I found the flashlight, and clicked the button. Nothing happened. The batteries were dead. So, I fumbled my way into the kitchen and replaced the batteries. Ahhh, finally – light! I then lit the oil lamp and headed back to the office. Without the computer my options were limited, so I opted to work on this newsletter. I pulled out Poetry for Dummies and leafed through it.
Chapter 11 is about writing exercises that come from experienced creative writing teachers. Some of the ideas were interesting; some were not. One of the ideas from Bernadette Mayer touted journaling. Personally, I found it rather blasé, but I liked some of the topics they suggested. They piqued my interest and sparked my own creative juices, or the hair dye I used earlier that evening seeped into my brain cells. Either way, it could mean a merit badge for YOU!
So here’s the challenge:
Write a poem a day for the next three weeks!
That doesn’t sound too difficult does it? Of course not! In fact, it doesn’t even have to be a good poem! (But, if I think you’re not even trying, I reserve the right to disqualify you.)
So, what’s the catch?
Well, you must use the topic I specify, on the day I specify, and follow any guidelines. (i.e. Write a poem about love: use the word chartreuse; do not use the words love, heart) Simple enough, right? Are you up for the challenge?
How to Participate
1. Set up a book or static item called “Your name’s” 21 Days of Poetry and EMAIL terryjroo with the item number by Friday, March 2nd @ 10 PM, WDC (Eastern Standard) time. (i.e. mine would be: Ter’s 21 Days of Poetry)
2. Every night by midnight (12 AM) WDC time, starting on March 2nd the prompt will be posted in "Invalid Item" . Put this item in your favorites list so you can find it easily.
You will have until 10 PM WDC time the next day to post your poem for that day’s prompt.
(i.e. Prompt posted prior to midnight March 2nd will say:
Prompt for March 3rd (Must be posted by 10 PM)
Subject: Your favorite food
Word to use: savory
Words not to use: favorite, delicious)
Guidelines
1. If you do not complete your poem on time you will be disqualified. You can still participate but you will not be eligible for a merit badge.
2. If you are using a static item for this challenge, please clearly separate and mark the days with the date and subject of the poem. Book entries should also use the date and subject.
3. I will be checking these items each night (and enlisting the help of others if necessary) and disqualifying participants as we go if needed.
Finishing Up
1. The last prompt will be posted on Thursday, March 22nd and poems must be posted by 10 PM, March 23rd.
2. Qualified participants will receive their merit badges by Monday, March 26th and their items will be listed in the March 28th Poetry Newsletter.
I hope this will be something fun that will help you improve your writing! I look forward to reading your poems! If you have any questions, please email me.
Let your love of poetry shine!
