About This Newsletter

Men fear death as children fear to go into the dark; and as that natural fear in children is increased with tales, so is the other.
~Sir Francis Bacon

No passion so effectively robs the mind of all its powers of acting and reasoning as fear.

When you look into the abyss, the abyss also looks into you.

Letter from the editor

mask, n. 1. a covering for the face, worn especially for concealment or protection. 2. something that disguises or conceals. 3. to disguise, cover, conceal or shield with or as if with a mask.

I have written about fear of the unknown in the past. Masks, I feel, are the personification of this. If seen, they alert us to the unknown. If hidden from view, we have no idea of the impending danger.

How many of you have shuddered through the adventures of Jason Vorhees and Michael Myers? Even Freddy Krueger has a representative mask. Physical masks give us a hint of the unknown. We know there is terror soon to be unleashed but we are left to wonder about the man, or monster, behind the mask. Who is this person really? What do they think about other than killing? Do they feel? Even though their individual tragedies, and thus motives, are revealed to us, I still wonder why they think the way they do. The masks, and what lies hidden beneath, are as horrifying as their deeds.

What about those who wear a different mask? Those who lead double lives such as vampires, werewolves, Jack the Ripper? This particular brand of monster hides from us what they truly are. We have no warning of the terror about to be unleashed. This kind of mask is internal. We are caught off guard by what we cannot see.

Have you used either of these examples of masks in your horror writing? Considered it? Using the mystery of masks moves your piece along, keeping your readers wondering what to expect. Utilize it to keep them off balance until you are ready to reveal what lies behind the mask, either physical or mental. If the mask so chooses, it may keep you guessing as well!

Ask & Answer

From Abominae Author Icon: Very cool newsletter. I have long been interested in cryptozoology and love reading about or watching programs about cryptids. I'm glad to see mention of this here, thanks!

From Grendel Author Icon: There is a phenomenon known as ShadowPeople. I discovered this after encountering them
as a child. After sketching what I had seen, and telling the story for nearly 30 years, I
came across a reference to them online, along with a picture similar to the one I had been
showing to people for years. My daughter was present during my discovery, and had been
shown the pictures as a child. Needless to say, we were both somewhat surprised (her
more than myself, because I grew up in an ancient colonial where things happened nearly
every day). I would look into this more, if I were you. Just thought I'd pass that on.

From Darkness Author Icon: I'm so glad someone has looked into this. I use many documentaries in my research for my work. Often cryptozoologists are mentioned and interviewed, but they never talk about them otherwise. Thanks for shedding some light on an interesting subject. Rock on, Darkness.
