Letter from the editor

Continuing on with the next chapter in Writing The Wave by Elizabeth Ayres

Where’s The Bottom?

Chapter 4

Name a Main Idea and Develop It

Waking Dreams

set your timer for 5 minutes

1. invent a dream- don’t cheat and use a dream that you’ve actually had, make one up

2. now, jot down any world situation that comes to mind- not from your personal life, but from “the headlines” (write it down in a minute or less)

set your timer for 5 minutes

3. write down a second dream, unrelated to the first

4. now, jot down a personal situation. It could be something current or something from your past. (write it down in a minute or less)

~ DON’T GO ON UNTIL YOU’VE FINISHED STEP 4 ~

set your timer for 4 minutes

5. write down all the ways in which your two dreams (step 1 and 3) are alike

~ DON’T GO ON UNTIL YOU’VE FINISHED STEP 5 ~

set your timer for 4 minutes

6. write down all the ways in which your two situations
(step 2 and 4) are alike

~ DON’T GO ON UNTIL YOU’VE FINISHED STEP 6 ~

7. Glance through all that you’ve written so far in this exercise. Identify one theme (a main idea) that seems to be common to all the writing in steps 1 through 6. Look through the raw material of steps 1 through 6 and jot down a theme. If you have more than one theme, jot them all down and circle the one you’re going to use.

~ DON’T GO ON UNTIL YOU’VE FINISHED STEP 7 ~

Now put aside all of your previous writing, leaving out only the theme that you have chosen

Set your timer for 5 minutes

8. In list form, brainstorm as many images or scenes as possible that embody the theme you defined in step 7

Set your timer for 10 minutes

9. Select one image or scene from the list in step 8. Write about it in as much sensory detail as possible. Your purpose is to communicate your chosen theme, but don’t mention it. Concentrate instead on the image, making it as real as possible for the reader.

You’ve now completed Chapter 4, and Part 1!

Part 2 Going Deeper…
