Product Reviewing
Besides reviewing the work of members of the site (a vital, cooperative, and mutually beneficial endeavour), there are other types of reviews you can complete here at Writing.com
Remember those book reports/reviews you used to write back in school (or perhaps still are writing)? Well, you can do them here, too, under Writing - Product Review. What's more, you can review not only Books, but DVDs, Music, Software, VHS Videos, and Video Games.
Each Product review contains some prompts, giving an easy reminder of aspects to include in your review. They are different according to what type of product you are reviewing, but here is an example. These are the headings for a book review, with some suugestions for what you could writer under each heading.
Summary of this Book... What is the story about? What are it's themes, the genre?
This type of Book is good for... Suggest a target audience (eg. teens/adults/women). You could describe the kind of person who might enjoy it, such as 'a person who likes to learn information presentened with a sense of humour'.
I especially liked... This is all about your feelings for the book. When you think about it, remember the way it was worded, the emotion, plot, characterisation, length, graphics. You may like it for what you learned, or how satisfied you felt at the end. You should always give at least one positive.
I didn't like... As with the things you liked, consider the same aspects for any aspects you did not like. A balanced review will include a note of something that was not 'great'. Try to present the negative point in a positive way.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to... Be polite, but honest. Is it a re-read, a throw away, a giveaway? Is it going to take a permanent position on your bookshelf or end up at the boot sale? Will you circulate it amongst your friends, recommend it to your library/school/church? Did it make you want to change your habits, do something different, or be a better person in some way? Was it useful, or counter-productive?
This Book made me feel... Discuss how the book made you feel. Perhaps it left you feeling inspired or depressed. Think about the range of emotions as you read it. What came through the strongest? What feeling persisted once the book was finished and set aside for a while?
The author of this Book... Here is the opportunity to list past titles of the author, or a little biography about them. Has the author performed better, worse, or the same standard in this book compared to others of theirs you've read? Include interesting facts about the writer if you happen to know them. Give some of their background if applicable. For example for a book on parenting, you may wish to say 'The author has raised 4 children and taught 7th grade for 10 years. You can find information on the author on the fly cover of the book or the internet.
I recommend this Book because... Sum up why you are recommending this book to the community. Do not simply repeat information given under the headings, but simplify it all into a nice little 1-2 sentences. Anything not already covered can also be added here.
Thanks for reading.

daydreamer13
You're very welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed the newsletter.
Dear Editor,
I am very much a newbie here, and find I have trouble with using bitem and other ways to enhance writing, i.e., font size, font color, and so on. I don't know what I'm doing incorrectly. Still, I find posting is no problem, so at least I have that. But entering contests where bitem format is required--well, I'd like to learn how to do that, because otherwise I don't get to 'cast my bread on the waters' and see if I can win a prize...other than that, I love this site!
Peace, Ree

Welcome to the site and good job on getting posting items sorted out. The 'bitem' formats might seem a little confusing, but in no time at all it will become second nature. All of Writing.com's formatting codes use the swirly brackets . This goes for everything from colour, bold, to linking items for contests, etc.
For a complete guide to all the codes and how they look when used, go to the "Site Tools" Drop down menu and click on "WritingML Help".
Great topic to write on.
I always try and check the genres on the items I review!

Thank you. It's very helpful to check the genre of items being reviewed. I find it also helps to suggest a few genres that might suit the item.
