"Sit down and put down everything that comes into your head and then you're a writer. But an author is one who can judge his own stuff's worth, without pity, and destroy most of it." Sidonie Gabrielle
You Have to Practice!
How can you practice writing if you don’t know what to write about? You don’t have to depend on someone else giving you a first line or a prompt; inspiration is all around you. When someone advises you to ‘just write, write a descriptive paragraph, keep practicing, and exercise with freewrites, they are serious.
I read a piece that was written by a member who didn't realize she was practicing with this fun freewrite. The end product was pretty good and it was humorous.
She said:
"I was bored and just felt like writing so that's what I did."
And that's exactly the way to do it, Rainbows. Keep practicing!
Even the most minuscule and simplest of things can have a great deal written about them. Write what you see is there, and write about what you don't see, but are sure is there. Like simple daily objects that we take for granted and can't begin to describe. A good example of practicing is seen in a review I received on this graphic that I'd forgotten to make unratable. Now this is creative writing.

“Huh! It's really pretty amazing how these graphics can just seem to come alive. Take this fan for instance.
Number One; it's an old fan. You can tell right off by the front cover. There's enough space between those safety arms to stick your head through. On the plus side, however, you don't have to take it apart every other week to clean the cat hair out of it.
Number Two; it's a dirty fan. You can tell that by those heavy nicotine stains on the blades. This thing probably hasn't been cleaned since it got lifted out of Sam Spade's office. Imagine the second-hand smoke this contraption is giving off after all this time! On the plus side, the fan blades will eventually match the color of the black base.
Number Three; it's probably a hazardous fan. Fans like this have cloth covering their plug wires instead of plastic. It is almost a certainty that those wires are arcing as I am writing these very words. On the plus side, the fan could greatly diminish overcrowding on Death Row in any penal institution across the land. Of course it would have to be placed in the right hands.
Number Four; this fan is dangerous!!! If the three previous examples above haven't convinced you, then check out that base on the bottom of the fan. I bet if Harry Potter picked that fan up by its neck and swung it, he could drop the Frankenstein monster dead in his tracks.”
Gen
Thanks, Gen.
Again, to become a better writer, practice!

Submitted Comment: I just found the "My Notepad" feature - along with "My Scratch Pad." These are excellent tools for drafting and previewing reviews and emails that a lot of newbies may not know exist.
Thank you. These features are also available in The Review Tool for reviews, and I believe anyone can preview their email before sending it. The Notepad is useful for these things, and for so much more. I store links, signatures and notes there; the uses are unlimited.

espirit,
Once again, you've put so much information that is valuable to not just the newbie, but to those of us that don't use all of the site items. Thank you, I'm usually a little behind, for the most part, I read the newbie and encourage and expose myself to different genres.
You are truly amazing. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your newsletter.
Deb
Thank you, Deb, I'm usually a little behind too. There is so much information to share, the challenge lies in choosing a topic.

Submitted Comment: Thank you for explaining about that whole interrobang thing. I have put a few interrobangs in some of my work but it always looks so wrong.
Thanks again,
Ash
Thanks, Ash, I'm glad it was helpful.

Submitted Comment: I guess I'm still a newbie in a way. I got in in January and still don't know everything you can do here. I only found out about campfires last month. But I enjoy reading the work of others. helps me with my own.

The problem with that is, The StoryMaster and The StoryMistress keep coming up with new ideas and perks. We'll never learn it all as long as they do that! But, it sure keeps the site interesting, doesn't it?
