About This Newsletter

From the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of space - and beyond - Action/Adventure presents myriad opportunities for heroes and heroines to hone their skills, battle the elements, fight villains, or perhaps merely survive.

But is it enough?

I'm Robert Waltz Author Icon, and I'll be your guest guide this week.

Very dangerous. You go first.

Not Alone

Action/Adventure heroes often stand alone against incredible odds, and survive. But can the Action/Adventure genre itself stand alone?

Most often, Action/Adventure is paired with other genres, depending upon the plot or setting. We're all familiar with the Action/Adventure Romance and the Action Adventure Science Fiction tales; we've tagged along with various protagonists in Action/Adventure Fantasy books and movies, and shivered with delight at the narrow escapes (or shuddered in disgust at the failures) in an Action/Adventure Horror story.

But myriad other genres exist, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to suggest some... nonstandard... pairings with other genres. So let's go to the list of Writing.Com genres available, and spin the Wheel of Genre!

(lots of lights flashing and hands clapping)

Action/Adventure :: Food/Cooking
This could work! Think Iron Chef meets The Running Man. The featured ingredient? The loser! With recipes and overdubbed judges. Allez Cuisine!

Action/Adventure :: Parenting
This one really speaks for itself. I'm surprised I don't see more of these.

Action/Adventure :: Health
The Buggles pursued Ralph through his yard. By the time the overweight accountant reached the sidewalk, he fell to his knees, sweat pouring from his face like water from some ancient Roman fountain. The heart attack claimed him long before the first Buggle touched his supine form. See? Really, it writes itself. You do tend to go through protagonists fairly quickly, however.

Action/Adventure :: Home/Garden
Tires screeching, Carol rammed her Escalade into the last remaining parking space, cutting off a honking liberal in a Prius. Ignoring the stream of loud and distinctly non-pacifist expletives pouring from the hippie's mouth, Carol slammed the bulky door and bolted for the entrance to the Garden Center. A crowd was already milling outside, but Carol was ready: reaching into her voluminous purse, she seized her Taser. She held it under her jacket as she ran toward the retail-happy throng. Whatever it takes, she said to herself, gritting her teeth in determination, I'm coming home with a hydrangea today.

Action/Adventure :: Hobby/Craft
Your ex-husband somehow got all your scrapbooking supplies in the divorce. Your mission: track him and that waitress down in Tahiti, and get them back! And maybe you can pick up a few new island patterns while you're there.

Action/Adventure :: Comedy
... Nah, that'll never work.

Anyway, I'm sure you can come up with your own. Whatever you mix your Action/Adventure with, have fun with it - and your readers will, too!

Editor's Picks

Much to my everlasting surprise, I found examples of the above unlikely combinations right here on Writing.Com! (And to my even greater surprise, not all of them are humorous).
