Comedic Anecdotes

Comedic anecdotes are a fancy way of saying you are telling a story about something funny that happened. Generally an anecdote is a biographical story told in first person. It doesn't have to be comedy, but many are because people love to share stories that make others laugh.

Oftentimes it's hard to convey the story and so you end up saying, "I guess you had to be there," which is a shame because you know they can't really be there and they are missing out on some funny stuff. As a comedy writer, you can't leave it at that. You need to improve the tale so that the reader can see the hilarity as it unfolds. Comedic writing is a challenge, but worth it when done well so practice is key.

I'm sure everyone has a comedic anecdote to share with the readers on the site. Post them and get feedback about what made them laugh and what missed the mark. I love getting reviews that say I made the reader laugh out loud, or spit soda out their nose, or spew coffee all over the keyboard, but even better are the ones that tell me what I could do to make the story better.

My personal comedic anecdotes center mostly around my most embarrassing moments. They occur faster than I can write them down, which is unfortunate for me as a person, but valuable for me as a writer! I'm sure everyone has funny stories to share. Some of us just aren't as willing, or able, to put our most embarrassing moments on paper for everyone else to laugh at. For those people, I say abandon the anecdote format and write the moment into another fictional piece. Create a character that has something funny happen to them based on your embarrassing moment.

After all, nobody has to know that you walked around all day with your skirt tucked into your hosiery, or that you tripped and tackled your sparring partner during your last martial arts test, or even that you went through the day with piece of chocolate stuck to your rump and nobody told you. These moments can all be presented as fiction, happening to a character, and thereby preserving your stellar reputation as a person that has it all together instead of the goofy wingnut that you truly are.

Good luck with your comedic attempts! Write On!

Until Next Time,
