Earning "Community Recognitions"
There has been interest in how Community Recognition numbers are earned. The full process is explained in the items linked below, but sometimes we just don't have time to search out and read for ourselves. These excerpts will show you what is answered in the items. If adding to your Community Number is important to you, read the entire items so you will know how it works. I've listed only a fraction of the questions covered.
Referral Credits
To recognize those who bring in new members by use of valid referral links, Writing.Com awards "Recognitions" for each of those new members who signs up and maintains their membership.
New visitors to Writing.Com are tagged using a browser based internet "cookie". A "cookie" is a small file stored by the web browser on the visitor's computer. When a new visitor views his or her very first page on Writing.Com, our cookie records the username associated with that page. If that visitor later signs up for his or her own account, the member whose username the visitor viewed first is given one "Recognition" for that referral.
To help get your URL noticed and earn the referral, follow these tips.
Tip #1: Add your Writing.Com Public Portfolio URL to your email signatures.
Tip #2: Link to your Public Portfolio from your homepage or other sites you control.
Tip #3: Directly invite family, friends, teachers, coworkers, publishers, agents, editors and more to visit your Writing.Com public portfolio.
Tip #4: Start an Interactive Story on Writing.Com and invite your friends to participate with you!
Tip #5: Create business cards with your portfolio URL and hand them to friends, associates and other people you may meet who are interested in reading or writing.
Tip #6: Include your Portfolio URL when posting in relevant newsgroups, groups or discussion forums.

Is my rfrid automatically included when I use the Tell A Friend system?
When a Referred Member is counted, other than cookies issues, how are they counted?
How long does Writing.Com's tracking cookie last?
I did not receive a Referred Member recognition that I think I should have received. What can I do?
Review Recognition Credit
Review Recognitions are awarded to members in the ratio of 1 recognition point for every 100 current reviews. "Current reviews" are any reviews attached to items currently on Writing.Com. Only one review per item will count towards a member's review recognitions. When an item is removed from Writing.Com, the reviews associated to it are also removed.
Each Review Recognition earned increases a member's overall Community Recognition.
Bonus Recognitions are awarded to members by Writing.Com for various reasons, such as length of membership, promotions, activities and more. Each Bonus earned increases a member's Community Recognition.
To view a detailed outline of a member's earned Bonus Recognitions, click that particular link from within his or her Community Recognition Details window.
When an activity occurs where members can earn Bonus Recognition, a sitewide announcement will be provided.
Merit Badges should be self-explanatory. Each Badge received adds one recognition credit to your number.
Community Recognitions are an overall summary of a member's presence within the Writing.Com community. Recognitions are calculated by adding together the numbers of referred members, qualified merit badges and Bonus Recognitions.
A member's Community Recognition is displayed as a linked number following their handle. For example: The StoryMaster
Clicking on the number launches a window which contains the details of that member's Community Recognition. In addition, a visual summary of all Merit Badges that have been received is also provided.
If you have a question look in the FAQ's Section at the top of the page. If the answer isn't there, ask at one of the two Support Forums. Someone will be ready to answer it for you.

Submitted Comment: I'm new here, never have taken a writing course, been writing for myself, family and friends all my life of, short stories, poems, etc. I realize that I have a lot to learn about the correct way to write. I have no problem with editing, re-writing, correcting grammer, etc. Got two different opinions, one to correct everything, one that says she can relate this with her own life, please? what do I do? Just want poeple to see and feel what I see and feel when I write it.
All writing from real life experiences.
You will get as many opinions as you have reviewers, and if you see a pattern of agreement among the reviewers, you may want to think about reworking that particular area some more. The final decision of change or not to change is always left to the writer.
Remember to read your neighbor’s work too!

Submitted Comment:
The rating system is a bit controversial, and it strikes an emotional chord.
And it probably always will, as long as we have ratings included with the reviews. I have my own personal thoughts on ratings, and I'm sure most of us do. But the fact of the matter is, we need to deal with them because that is what we have here. Like it or not! This is a great newsletter, Esprit, because you included easy references to the official information on the topic. Good job, as always!

Thanks, Cubby! personally, I like the rating system. The site just wouldn't be the same without this unique program.
