Making Time to Write
Unless writing is your full time job, it can be difficult to find time to write in an already hectic day. As writers, we all struggle with the balance between doing what we must for family, friends, and community, and finding time for ourselves and our writing. We've all heard that it's important to find time for ourselves, but sometimes that time seems unreachable.
Often, I find myself waiting until the end of the day to write and by the time everything else is finished, I am exhausted, physically and mentally. This is not the best way to write as my creativity is hard to tap into at this point. However, if it's the only time available, then I make the best of it by writing scenarios or plot ideas in a journal rather than forgoing writing altogether. Then, when I do have time to devote to writing, I have a good starting point.
In order to make time to write, you must make it a priority. Fitting it into your schedule is not possible if you wait until you "find" the time, but if you schedule it in as you would any other appointment, you will write. I've found that the best way to do this is to schedule it before I start my day. Writing first thing in the morning helps to clear my head and get my blood flowing, much like an exercise routine will for athletes.
I start my day at five and typically write for forty-five minutes to an hour, depending on how the words are flowing. It doesn't seem like much time, but when you are in a routine, you'd be amazed at how quickly you can get started. So endeavor to find time in your day, whether it is fifteen minutes during your lunch break or an hour in the morning. Those minutes add up and by the end of the month, you'll be surprised at how much you've written.
Until Next Time,
Diane
