WDC is Huge and Confusing. Where Is It - How Do I?

It can be hard to find what you're looking for in the first few days. It took me about a week to realize I wasn't going to get lost if I wandered into new territory. There is a system and I advise you to take a few hours and explore it. You won't remember all of it, but you will know where to look when you need it.

There are two places that hold almost everything you'll need. Study them, read and learn them, use them.

*Bullet* Site Navigation.
*Bullet* My Writing.Com Account Control Center

Site Navigation is exactly what it claims to be. It contains links to everything in the Site. The titles are clear and self-explanatory. Open them and explore. Especially study My Places. I find it a most handy tool.

IM Chat (13) The number here tells you how many members are active at the moment.

If the IM console does not open for you, go to the Tool function in your Browser and ALLOW or OPEN pop-up's on WDC. Allowing them on this site will not affect your setting preference on other sites. IM is a POPUP window.

Member Info
Username: storytime
My Email: No new (nw)
>>-------> Logout

Member info is in the left side column. You can easily see if you have e-mail or not. (nw) stands for New Window. If you click (nw), a new window will open and you'll not lose the page you're on.

If this number shows you have e-mail, but your e-mail page shows none, refresh the page.

*Bullet* My Writing.Com Account Control Center

Use this page as your home base. Study it.

Your Account page is filled with instructions on how to set and edit your site preferences.

Account Settings & Options
Configure and personalize

Edit Text & Special Settings
Edit your Bio Block, Highlighted Items, My Blog Item, Public Portfolio Item and Billboard

Your public listing content filter is set to: Do NOT Exclude Any Items
You can change your filter by editing your account details.

I have my filter set to Do NOT Exclude any items, but many do not want to see certain words or genres, so the filter can be set to exclude the items by content rate.
If you don't want to accidently open an XGC item, set your filter.

Public Rating and Review Counts:

If you're active within Writing.Com, then your Given Ratings and Reviews count are things you'll want to list publicly within your Public Portfolio. In your account page, look for this area, choose the option to make your sent reviews public or not. Making them public will allow others to reward them, to see how active you are as a reviewer, and to see your sent reviews. If you decide to keep them private, the option is there.

This option does NOT include your received reviews, they still remain private to you.

Highlighted Items:

You may select up to three of your Favorite Writing.Com items for highlighting within your bioblock. These may be any items on Writing.Com, yours or not, with ANY content rating PROVIDED that their title and brief description comply with the E rating imposed on all bioblocks. Please remember, use of this space is a privilege, not a right; please use it responsibly and keep your bio block E rated! This section is NOT REQUIRED!
1. Item ID#
2. Item ID#
3. Item ID#

Enter the ID number you want to show in your portfolio and in the side column, save the changes and you're done. This does not have to be your item.

Edit Preferences
Edit Signature(s)
Edit Personal Information
Manage Newsletter Subscriptions
Transfer Item to Another Member
Change Username and Email

There are more options, just look through and find them. There are too many to list in one newsletter. Did you know you can stayed logged on to WDC for a year if you wanted to? But, I wouldn't suggest this if you share a computer. Anyone that happened onto your port from your computer would be able to edit your work or pretend they were you, so be careful.

You'll find your site experience to be more pleasant as you learn Site Navigation and Your Account. Use the Search utility by typing in a keyword to find specific topics.

Yes, WDC is huge, but it is user friendly if you know where to look. Begin with the obvious; the e-mail you received when you signed on. It's sent to give you a boost on using the site.
