About This Newsletter

Welcome to the Contests & Activities Newsletter. I'm Shannon Author IconMail Icon, and I'm your editor this week.

Over the years I've attended several writers' conferences. One of the speakers asked us to raise our hands if we had bookshelves filled with writing references. Nearly everyone raised their hand. He nodded his head knowingly and said, "It's a trap. Make sure you don't spend all your time reading about writing. Writers write."

His words stuck, and I find they reverberate in my head every time I'm tempted to purchase another writing reference.

Writers write.

The Clock is Ticking

What are you waiting for? All those raffle tickets you wanted to buy, all those contests you wanted to enter, all those auctions you wanted in on ... they all have deadlines.

What have you been doing? Have you bought your raffle tickets? You know most of the proceeds go to worthy causes around WDC. Have you written that story or poem to enter in the contest? You know your winnings might help purchase your next upgrade or get those raffle tickets you've been meaning to buy. And as for contest entries, isn't it better to be prepared than to deal with a last-minute rush? Once it's done, and done early, you'll have all that extra time to revise, ensuring you have a prim, polished product.

Have you placed your bid in that auction? Auctions serve many purposes: they help fund different WDC groups, they expose you and your writing to other members, they offer reviews and helpful feedback for your work and the work of others, and auctions allow you to be a part of something bigger than yourself. Have you considered donating to an auction? I don't just mean gift points so you can get a generosity merit badge--I'm talking about giving of yourself. Donate reviews, upgrades, awardicons, merit badges, signatures, merchandise ... donate without expecting anything in return.

There are so many kind, generous people on this site. That's what makes Writing.com such a wonderful community, and it's a community of which we can all be proud.

Until next time, keep writing, and we'll keep reading.

Ask & Answer

Ash Author IconMail Icon writes: "This contests and activities newsletter was really awesome! I can't believe there are so many contests on writing.com. ~Ash" Thank you for your great feedback, Ash! I'm so glad I was able to introduce you to just a few of the great contests and activities WDC has to offer. I also couldn't help but notice that you joined on May 2 of 2006. That's my birthday! *Bigsmile*

Joshiahis Author IconMail Icon writes: "I wish their were more contests linked outside of WDC, like "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window. . I didn't win, but I rated high enough to see my work posted in an e-zine on another website." I agree with you, L.D. There are many wonderful contests here, and most don't get seen outside WDC. It's up to each of us to spread the word. Hopefully this newsletter will help as well. And 3rd Place is most definitely a win--and one to be proud of. Congratulations!

In the October 1 newsletter I decided to run a contest. The prompt: In 500 words or less tell me about something you won. It can be funny, serious, whatever you like. Winner will receive a Job Well Done MB.

There were two entries that really stood out and I couldn't decide which to choose, so I have decided to give them both Job Well Done MBs! The first was sent to me in an email and is copied/pasted below while the second came to me in bitem format.

Please congratulate the winners by reading their entries below.

Cemetarykat says,Bring it on! Author IconMail Icon writes:
Hi Shannon,

Normally I just skim the Newsletters, but your opening paragraph caught my eye.

Short version: I owed my dad $1250.00 for helping me while I recovered from surgery. I was off work and a friend's daughter was broke down at the casino, so she asked me to pick her up. I'd never been to the casino before but figured, Why not! She Gave me $20.00, so I used $10.00 for gas and used the other $10.00 to play while waiting for my friend's daughter to cash out.

Last two coins and a comment about "Would just have to pay my dad back anyway!" Went to get up and lights and bells went off. Wow, I won $1300.00! I was so excited I ripped two stitches out and made them take photo.

I knew the first question my dad would ask (and did)--"What, you rob a bank?"

I played another $2.00 from the winnings and won another $500.00--the money I needed to pay my car payment. It was excellent. To this day it's one of my best memories. They had me hooked for a long time.

~Cemetarykat" What a great submission for my newsletter contest, Ceme! I'm gonna share this one with all the newsletter readers. Thank you!
