Feng Shui for Newbies
The first time I read about Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway), I immediately knew I wanted it. I've always been the type of person who longed for harmony in order to feel relaxed, but I never realized there was actually a name for what I needed. Being somewhat unorganized is not something I brag about, but I'm discovering that a lot of it has to do with not feeling balanced in an office where none of the furniture matches, the angle of my desk feels wrong, and my floor is used as a dumping grounds for purses, coats, and other stuff. According to Feng Shui principle, things like this block positive energy flow, therefore causing negativity which takes away productivity.
What does this have to do with writing? Hmmm... I bet you've already guessed. If not, think about it. Blocking energy also blocks creativity. Creativity is essential to writing. Negative flow zaps our ambition. It's no wonder my muse goes into hiding so often!
Our writing space isn't the only area that could use some Feng Shui either. The people we hook up with can do a number on us, too. Negative friends are like human vampires who suck the energy out of us. Have you ever had a conversation with someone who had nothing good to say, and you could just feel your energy level sinking? I've had staff members who have done that to me, and when they quit, whoosh! My overwhelming feelings of dreading work everyday, disappeared entirely. Suddenly I was enthusiastic once again, which in turn, produced creative energy.
Writing.com is a positive experience, for the most part, but there's always one bad apple trying to spoil things. And face it, some people click better than others. It's just the way things are. In order to keep your creative flow productive, surround yourself with a positive atmosphere. Stay away from negative energy, and you will be much happier.
Now...
Have a wonderful week!!!
Keep on Writing!
Yours truly,

And Now For Our Featured Newbies!
Excerpt: Without the sunlight to pour through the stained glass windows, the church seemed dark and slightly ominous to her. Shadows fell across the faces of the placid statues and leaked in puddles on the floor where the rows of pews blocked the ever present candle light. Checking the hood of her habit to ensure that it masked all of her hair, she stood slowly and turned to face the oncoming stranger.
Excerpt: I know my actions were reprehensible, I know most of you would willingly condemn me without a second thought; nevertheless I implore you to listen. To keep an open mind and save your judgement until you hear my tale.
Excerpt: I loved the sound of cicadas. I never did before - I used to be scared to death of them. But I love the noise they make, even if I won't go anywhere near them. There's just something about it that screams "summertime." It made me sad, though, because I'd been hearing them less and less as August came to an end. I stared out the window, laying lazily on the warm brown leather of my living-room chair.
Excerpt: Virgil, alone now, was sent away from the village, to the City, where he stayed in an orphanage. Being scarcely schooled, he was clever, but oddly quiet. A dark, pale-faced boy, he did not invite companionship. And, at the age of seventeen, after quitting the orphanage, after quitting his job in a local grocer’s, he turned his back on his past, and Virgil Mercer was never seen again.
Excerpt:
A stroll through the forest I shall take, memories
remake, as down those lonely trails I wonder
wishing those I remember were here to share
the splendor
Excerpt: Sly gaped then fumbled for the piece of paper in his pocket. Pulling it out he reread the address by the pale light of the moon:
Vault 208,
666, Hidden St.
He was certain he was standing on Hidden Street in front of 666. But how was he supposed to find Vault 208 in that place? He gaped at it again.
Excerpt: "Ma'a As-salama, Good bye," I said to the driver in the Arabic we had used since I had spotted that his name was Ahmad al-Barghouti. "I'll probably need a pick up from here after some hours. When do you go off shift?"
"It doesn't matter," he said, handing me his card and smiling.
"Sounds good." I shut the door and started slowly up the shrubbery lined sidewalk toward the front door. Stopping for a moment to take in the scene, I thought about how much I owed Dame Morgan, despite never having met her. She had been the author of instructional materials for all the ancient languages I have studied. Even though my graduate studies went beyond her materials, I always credited the sound foundation supplied by her books for my eventual successes.

I can't see why, as a writer, anyone would intentionally decline any input that would help them write better. I keep every newsletter I've ever received, because who knows, I may need the info located in them for something I may write in the future. Plus their freakin' FREE!!

The Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks
I'm embarrassed to admit that I knew very little about England's plague from the year 1666 until I read this very well-written historical novel. The story is narrated by Anna, a housemaid quarantined within her mountain village, along with the rest of the community. Death played no favoritism in this span of time and the struggle to survive did not come easy for many. The story of ignorance, mistrust, and loss the villagers experience, is one not to forget. Highly recommended.
