Letter from the editor

HOUSE OF INSPIRATION:

I think it is safe to say that after watching (and reading) ‘The Amityville Horror’ – I never looked at houses the same way again. Of course there’s the infamous ‘House on Haunted Hill’ (which might have drawn its inspiration from ‘The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson’)

and … ‘Black House’ by Stephen King and Peter Straub

and the list goes on. The point is, houses have a life of their own and simply beg to be explored by you the writer.

My new home is the very last on the block, right next to a thicket of trees that casts omninous shadows especially in the evening. There is no basement, but there is an attic that I’ve yet to pay a visit. However, at night, the noises begin – of course we are all familiar with the ‘old houses make sounds, so it’s to be expected’ – and never has my imagination run wild with this one. Every creak makes me wonder if the ghosts of those who have lived here are as restless as they sound. I wonder if they are upset I’ve moved in to disturb their quiet and they do their best to make my nights uneasy. Of course all these thoughts took place the first few days, but now I think the ghosts and I are at peace with one another. *Smile*

Allowing the creaks, moans and groans that your house makes should be a fertile ground for your next horror story. What secrets lie behind that wall? Or what terrifying incident took place within a specific room (or in that most commonly used place – the basement or the attic)? Don’t forget to make use of the surroundings too! Trees (woodland areas), lakes or rivers or the desolation the house feels surrounded by others, are all fodder for a good tale that’s bound to send chills racing up or down your reader’s spine.
