Quote
Rejection slips, or form letters, however tactfully phrased, are lacerations of the soul, if not quite inventions of the devil - but there is no way around them.

Manuscript Submission Record

Staying organized is not an easy matter for many writers. Stacks of books and piles of paper on our desks, notebooks, pens and pencils, phone, coffee cup, and whatever else there's room for, does not help a writer feel very organized.

And to be honest with you, I doubt if I ever will be completely organized because it's not in my make-up. But-- it's very important to be organized with where your manuscripts have been sent to. I made up a form that includes the date sent out, title of manuscript, where I sent it, the date of response, and comments. I also keep track of how many times each story has been submitted. Keeping a Manuscript Submission Record is not only a must, but it keeps me writing.

Since I've sent out over 80 manuscripts since June, it's especially important for me to keep track of where they are, if they've come back, or how long it's been since I sent them out. Record keeping helps me to stay grounded with my writing. I also keep monthly files with copies of the manuscripts I've sent out, along with the cover letter.

Publishers don't always send your manuscript back with the rejection slip. And one time I only got back 1 of 2 pages. I usually send a SASE along, but a few times I've only received back the slip. If I hadn't kept a hard copy of my manuscript, and my computer died for some reason, it would be lost forever. (That is, unless you keep an extra copy in your portfolio here at Writing.com! *Wink*) Many publishing houses have cut back on staff and are no longer returning manuscripts. They will contact you only if they are interested in your work.

If you're not organized, at least try to keep a Manuscript Submission Record and always keep a hard copy of your work!

Have a wonderful week!!!

Keep on Writing!

Yours truly,
Cubby ")

Excerpt:
Down by the bus stop
He leans on the railing,
Smelling of cheap wine
And memories.
It's hard to tell now,
But he was a child once,
Too,
Just as you.

It will be the greatest piece the world has ever seen. But it's splitting my head open.
by d'Anima Author Icon

Excerpt: I am composing. When it's finished, it will be the greatest piece the world has ever seen. But that's easy, because I am a great composer. I have played in all the greatest halls across the country, and in a few weeks I will play in them again. But I'm forgetting myself. It's time to begin.

Excerpt:
You found her existing in Black and White,
never turning her head from left to right.
Her face was a mask covering little girl scars.
Fear had control, she was locked behind bars.

The Subterrestrials: Lucky Number Open in new Window. [13+]
An installment in a series of short tales concerning a city's Subterrestrials.
by Daniel Saavedra Author Icon

Excerpt: Little Sammy Chong’s special Hallowe'en, invitation-only poker game lasted until about 4:30 AM. Afterward, Diamond Jackie and her beau, Big Mambo, began the journey back home while drunkenly singing various selections from Broadway musicals and throwing M-80s left over from Independence Day into the street. They would've taken a cab, but they'd not fared well at the tables.

No Ordinary Mouse Open in new Window. [E]
Abby is no ordinary mouse...
by hobbit fightin the good fight Author Icon

Excerpt: She was no ordinary mouse. Her mama and papa were quite pleased with her bonny appearance and doted over her quite enthusiastically, being she was the only one in the litter to survive. But how could her parents have known what a beauty she was? For you know sweet reader that mice are not at all fond of light and therefore their homes must be quite dark and dreary. However this mouse family was quite different from other mouse families in the Kingdom, and their home was filled with sweet light, dancing all about.

FEEDBACK

*Bullet* walpole72 Very informative. I look forward to the next letter. Thank you.

~ Thank you! *Smile*

*Bullet* JACE Author IconMail Icon Truer words were ne'er penned, Cubby. Everyone, not just Newbies, will benefit from that advice. I know from personal experience how important a notebook is. Thanks for the reminder.
Jace

~ My pleasure! *Bigsmile*

*Bullet* sarahreed Thanks for the very relevant article. I used to get very frustrated about getting and idea and having nowhere to write it down. So I went out and bought a big pack of pocket mini-notebooks. Then I went online and bought a box of pens on cords. So now when I go out, I wear the pen around my neck and the mini-notebook either goes in my purse or back pocket of my pants. I even do this at work, which gets me weird looks from my coworkers. But it has saved me over and over from forgetting an idea. *Bigsmile*

~ What a great idea! I think I'll get me some of those pens on cords! *Delight*
