Let your tears come. Let them water your soul. ~Eileen Mayhew

I didn't want my picture taken because I was going to cry. I didn't know why I was going to cry, but I knew that if anybody spoke to me or looked at me too closely the tears would fly out of my eyes and the sobs would fly out of my throat and I'd cry for a week. I could feel the tears brimming and sloshing in me like water in a glass that is unsteady and too full. ~Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar
The cure for anything is salt water - sweat, tears, or the sea. ~Isak Dinesen
It is such a secret place, the land of tears. ~Antoine de Saint-Exupery, The Little Prince

Tears. Crying. The first book of mine that was published was called 'The Crystal Tear' and it was all about 'the why of crying. During the course of the story the lead character learns that the best reason of all to cry is because you are happy.
Happy tears. The kind you laugh and smile through even though you may be blubbering like an idiot, but you don't really care . . . unless someone happens to have a camera handy and then you look at the picture in horror! *grin*
I've been thinking about happy tears because this Christmas was a tidal wave of them at our house. My daughter broke out in them twice. Me, once. We watched a movie that had us all reaching for tissues.
Searching for a tiny box hanging on the tree as yet one more ornament, hiding in plain sight, yet masked by the glitter and sparkle of hundreds of other ornaments. Unnoticed until one is sent searching, seeking for something new. Tiny box. Ring-sized box. The heart begins to jump wildly in one's chest. The tag is read, the bow and wrapping paper fall to the floor. Ring box, or earrings, perhaps. Raising the lid, eyes widen. Tears swell and bam!!! You can't see clearly the diamond ring inside through the veil of tears.
Leaping hugs, red, blotchy face, a snap of camera and the moment is immortalized. You see, although I've been married before, I've never had an engagement ring. I didn't realize just how much I'd missed that moment until a year after we were married, my husband gave me one this Christmas. Tiny, delicate. It sparkles with more fire than the fireworks finale. Oh I cried. I hung on and cried. Then my husband asks if I liked it. Men!
There always seems to be plenty of emotional moments in romance writing. Nature of the beast and all that. But it seems that the 'happy, laughing, crying so hard you can't be coherent' tears are often missing. Writers seem to have no problem having their heroines collapse in tears of grief, or self pity, of misery or of longing. But rarely do they dissolve in a sea of salt water due to sheer, unimagined joy and happiness. A single tear may creep out to be tenderly brushed away, but that's it. And that isn't realistic at all. Real women cry. And so, for that matter, do men. I know. He was crying too!

Multiple searches through the site yielded not a single item with tears of joy. Making my point, I suppose.
