Busy Portfolios

While a majority of members in our community have a dream of being published, many of us are still striving to achieve that goal. Sometimes the subject of our writing is something that is difficult to promote. Is your poetry not being reviewed? Are your technical essays being passed over? I thought I would offer a little advice.

The more active you are, the more visitors there will be to your portfolio. Don't be your own worst enemy. Uploading your work into your portfolio and then sitting and waiting for reviews will end up frustrating you. While it's not a good idea to pester members for reviews, it is a good idea to ask for help in the places on the site where it is appropriate to promote your work. The "Gaining Exposure Within Writing.ComOpen in new Window. page has some great ideas on how to gain exposure on the site.

Network with other members. If you love creating crossword puzzles, try other puzzles on the site and review them. Make edit suggestions and invite members to look at a puzzle in your portfolio that has garnered a lot of views. The more members you communicate with, the more views and reviews will occur in your portfolio. Join groups you have an interest in and find out from the group leader if there is a place to promote your work to other group members.

Practice your craft in contests. Entering contests can be fun and rewarding, so can hosting a contest. One of the benefits of entering a contest is gaining reviews from other contestants. They may read and review your entry, but they may also like your style and search for more to read in your portfolio. This could also be said for auction or raffle wins. You might bid on a review in an auction and the reviewer may enjoy your work enough to review other items in your port.

Review and reward other reviewers. Review items in our community with helpful suggestions. Point out what you liked and didn't like in the item and give detailed suggestions on how to improve. Feedback is an important step to final publication. To be a good reviewer, look at some of the great reviewers on the Reviews and Ranks page. Try to note what reviews are the most helpful and take the time to reward good reviewers. A 25 gp reward can mean a lot to a reviewer, knowing their hard work is being noticed.

While giant templates and multiple flashy images can be common, some of the most helpful reviews are simple comments and editorial suggestions. I'd much rather read a simple suggestion rather than a list of the reviewers accomplishments. If you keep your review template simple, there is room for a small promotion link in your signature.

Have some fun! Create fun things in your port like activities and games. Visiting members may surf through the rest of your portfolio, read and review.

The message here is simple. The more active you are, the more you will enjoy our community and the more help you will get perfecting your work. You'll meet some fun, creative friends along the way and become a valuable member of our site.
