Welcome to this weeks For Authors Newsletter. Once a month I will investigate, and compile the research I find, and present it here for you to use. I trust you will find the information useful.

Letter from the editor

This months editorial was sparked by a comment received to my last newsletter. I happen to enjoy this authors works, so if you have time to spare and are in the mood for some reviewing take a visit into her port. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

However speaking of disappointment it appears authors on the site are once again letting down the reviewers on the site. While this is an age old subject, I believe bringing it to the front runner today is acceptable.

Submitted Comment: This may not be the question or feedback you are looking for but since this is the newsletter for authors, perhaps you can answer my question or at least let me get it off my chest.

What happened to thanking someone for a review or at least acknowledging it? In the last 2wks I must have written at least 15 reviews and rated many of the items highly. I barely got an acknowledgement let a lone a thank you.
I'm not looking for thanks but seems to me if someone takes the time to read, rate and review common courtesy would suggest at least an acknowledgement.


You are very right Mothermouse, we don’t like to receive negative feedback from our newsletters. But like any good piece written if it captures the reader and allows their mind to wonder and see something they might not have before then it could very well turn a negative into a positive.

Thanking a reviewer for their time and energy has always been something that is either done or not done. There is not generally a happy medium with it. I know authors on the site that will in fact thank every single review that enters their email box, and others who don’t even bother to take the time read the review they just received.

Reviewing is done out of the goodness of our hearts because we know it can be a thankless job, however we do hope that the review, we have given touches the heart of the recipient and they in turn send back a reply.

Probably fifty percent send a reply and the other fifty percent do not. It is unfortunate when the reviewing we have done hits the fifty percent that doesn’t.

But there are many reasons why someone does not reply:
1) Lack of participation on the site
2) Illness
3) Computer problems / Internet access restrictions
4) They just don’t know how to respond
5) They don’t want to feel obligated to review you
6) Your review was too honest for their liking
7) They are extremely busy and have it in their “to do” box

While none of the above forgives a person who does not even acknowledge the time given it does give a reason as to why you have not received it yet, or are not going to receive it ever.

When looking at yourself as an author on this site remember it takes much shorter an amount of time to acknowledge a review received then it does to give one. This does not mean you have to type a letter back to the person who reviewed you, just give them some form of indication that you received it and read it. Sometimes it’s hard to know just what to reply back with.

My favorite replies to reviews I’ve received are:
1) cool thanks
2) thank you for taking the time to read and review
3) we are all welcome to our opinion, and I thank you for sharing yours with me
4) my apologies for being so late, many thanks for reading and reviewing

None of the above subject me to another reply, another review, but they do let the reviewer know that I read it if even if does take me a month or more to do it.

For anyone that received a review today in your email box

“Did you acknowledge the person who sent it to?”

Yes you did = great job, keep up the good work.

No you didn’t = what are you doing reading this newsletter don’t you have something to do!

Submitted Comment: Wannabe, I try to read every newsletter I subscribe to issuing both feedback and reviews of most of the featured items. I always find something useful for myself. The fact that I am a "little behind" on my commitment should go without saying.

Submitted Comment: Thank you for the list of publishers who provide guidelines. Wish I had such a list when I was trying to write for the greeting card market a number of years ago. I just may try again.

Submitted Comment: Well I’ve been on writing.com for almost TWO years now and I’ve NEVER read the newsletters. I always deleted them, but only recently this year about February I started reading them. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS OUT!!!! I started going back through my inbox and reading old ones I forgot to delete!!!
