Did you know that February is "Spunky Old Broad" month? No? Well now you do!
Hi, I'm Sophurky ~ your editor for this edition of the Comedy Newsletter. This week we'll take a look at some of those wacky holidays, and how to use them as fodder for our comedy writing! |

February is Avocado and Banana Month?!
As you read this edition of the newsletter, I'll be happily reclining on a beach on South Carolina soaking up some much needed Vitamin Sunshine. After this R&R my mood will most likely improve (unless it rains the whole time we are there). So upon my return, in my March newsletter, there is a good chance I'll be less cranky, maybe even with a "spring" in my step. "Spring" in my step, get it?
Until then I want to offer you some ideas for your comedy writing, something I often use as a source for coming up with occasional writing prompts for "The Writer's Cramp" . As you may already know, there are evidently people out there who sit around and make up Wacky Holidays for us to celebrate/observe/make fun of, and they helpfully post them on the internet. (This link is just one example of of such a site.) When you go to this one you'll find some pretty tame, normal, even recognizable holidays for the month of February:
American Heart Month - Makes sense, it's Valentine's month
An Affair to Remember Month - ditto the above
National Weddings Month - ditto the above
Creative Romance Month - ditto, this is getting boring ......
Black History Month - This is a familiar one - I do wonder why it's the shortest month of the year, what's up with that?
Canned Food Month - No clue why but okay, and not too weird
Great American Pie Month - ditto
National Cherry Month - Must have to do with the pie thing?
National Children's Dental Health Month - Again, no clue why
National Grapefruit Month - Whatever
Okay so none of those are very funny, but they are the pretty typical "observations" for the month of February. Some have been around longer than others and some are a bit odd, but for the most part they are pretty tame. But then the list continues:
Spunky Old Broad month - My favorite, as I aspire to be one
Avocado and Banana month - Um, okay -- love them both but not sure whey they get a month, or get one together
Care about your Indoor Air month -- ???
Jobs in Golf month -- How many jobs are there in golf? Golfer. Caddy. The end.
Return Shopping Carts to the Supermarket month -- I love this one!
Pull your Sofa off the Wall month -- One has to wonder, what's it doing on your wall?
In addition to entire months, there are weeks and days. So for instance, this week is: Read Me Week, National Entrepreneurship Week, and Build a Better Trade Show Image Week (zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)
Let's see if there are some more interesting days:
Feb 22 is National Margarita Day -- Ole! It's also National Thinking Day, so not sure that's gonna work well.
Feb 23 is Curling is Cool Day, as well as Inconvenience Yourself Day. Perhaps no connection there is apparent, until one considers that sliding around in ice with a broom and a large puck think could be a bit of an inconvenience?
Feb 26 is For Pete's Sake Day - My new personal favorite day.
The list goes on and on and on and you can find even more on other web sites if you search for "wacky holidays." Why bother? Well besides being a good exercise to kill a few minutes, you just might find they offer great opportunities for your to spark your creative muse by using some of them for inspiration. Better yet, combine a few together to create your comedic offerings. Let me know if you come up with anything, and I'll share your wacky holiday comedy items next month.
In the meantime, enjoy Texas Cowboy Poetry Week!

Now for a few comments from my last Comedy Newsletter, "Comedy Newsletter (January 26, 2011)" :
From RICH
At least there is light in the darkest of tunnels, next month will be February, and you will be able to complain less, it has only 28 days. Oh yes, now you have the nifty fifties .... go well. The less said - the better.
Thank goodness for February -- and even more thanks for March, and April!

It's so cold, Good Humor bars ice over.

Hey, Hon, lemme give you a little cheese with that whine
Thanks Billy!
From Smiling Jack
Sophy, thank you so much for featuring my little story in your Jan. newsletter about coping with the weather. You also brought back warm memories of my chilling nights at Great Lakes Naval Training Station many moons ago. During a flu flare-up the doctors decided it was best if we slept with the barracks' windows open. It was so cold with the wind whistling through our quarters even flu bugs didn't hang around.
Well there's one cure I've never heard of -- not sure I'd be willing to try it! Brrrrrrrrrrrr!
That's all for this month -- see you next time! And on behalf of the other regular Comedy Newsletter Editors, Robert Waltz and Ẃeβ࿚ẂỉԎḈĥ remember to WRITE AND LAUGH ON! Sophurky |
