Some people pray. Some people meditate. Those moments of calm are very beneficial, and can bring us the focus and clarity we need to carry on.
This week's Spiritual Newsletter is about finding that inner calm, and the ways we might achieve it.

Today, for the first time in 25 years, I went to the dentist. It was on my to-do list for this year. To be fair, my initial appointment was for several weeks ago, but unfortunately I'd fallen ill with the flu, so I had to reschedule.
25 years is a long time, caused by financial issues, moving to another country, and a load of anxiety issues on top of that. I was very frightened when I waited for the taxi. It didn't help that I had been unable to sleep all night because of nerves.
The strange thing is that once I'd made it past the somewhat unfriendly receptionist and onto the dentist's chair, I felt calm. Moments earlier, right there at the reception I'd felt the urge to turn and run, but that was when I said a silent prayer and I made it through. I was alright during the appointment and I may be tired now, but I am also happy that I went.
I've prayed ever since I was a child. Hardly ever do I pray out loud, I simply think my prayer, but it tends to make me feel calmer, even when I am scared or upset. When things have gone well, I say thanks. When things aren't so well, I ask for guidance and strength. When family or friends are in need of support, I'll give them special thought, but I do pray for their wellbeing all the time. When things are bad in the world, and I am aware of it, I will pray about that, too.
It is strange, in a way, because I have always been insecure about whether or not my prayers are heard. Some people are so certain that they have a connection with the Higher Being they pray to. I have never been that certain, but what I do know is that at the very least I tend to feel better afterwards and, in any case, it can't hurt to wish others well.
I suppose that prayer is similar to meditation. It's a time set aside for reflection and focus on what matters. All distractions and issues of only minor importance are nudged back, and for a while, at least, there is peace. On some occasions, this leads to greater clarity. On most occasions I surface feeling better than I had before.
I have mentioned it in previous Newsletters, but we all need some quiet in our lives. It is good to gather our thoughts and instead of stressing about everything that can go wrong, to gently aim for a solution and the strength to deal with our daily struggles, or even deal with those matters that are out of our hands.
My prayers help me, but I don't think a person needs to be religious to find these moments of calm. It can help to feel that there is a Higher Power who listens, and who looks after us, who can chase away stress and who can offer us strength, but I do feel that at least a part of the power of prayer is in the process of actually saying or thinking it. Perhaps this is because the focus is on the positive, the solutions, the better outcome. This is bound to calm a person and leave a positive feeling afterwards.
I would be interested in how others find their moments of inner calm, so feel free to share! I am certain that there are many ways that people practice, and I'd love to learn more about them.

Thank you so much! Yes, I am enjoying it. It's a slow start and a whole lot of figuring things out anew, but it's fun and it is nice to have something completely different to spend time on every now and then.

b_boonstra - So true about me-time :)Being a mom of four, I need some time for me from time to time. First in writing, studying poetry, later I started to knit when I fell into writers block in 2006. Now one of my designs is on the cover of KnitCircus magazine (www.knitcircus.com) and my life is getting busier than ever. My knitting is my way to relax, even with deadlines to accomplish .
A mother of four definitely needs some me time! I really admire those who are parents and I can only imagine how busy your life must be. Congrats on getting one of your designs on the cover of a magazine! You must be very talented . I would love to see you write again, though. In fact, I must check your portfolio to see if you have. I remember you're a very talented poet as well. But the important thing is that you have something to relax with - even with deadlines to meet!

Alexandra Jones - Glad to hear you are considering embracing your inner gamer-geek again! I've also been a fan of Magic: The Gathering in the past; the cards really are beautiful. I'm also a World of Warcraft player and proud of it. I don't care if I am getting 'too old' for such things because I don't believe you can be 'too old' for anything. As long as you get joy and relaxation out of your hobby, then it is a positive thing. Thanks for sharing! ~Ali

Jessette - Every person has there own hobby in life...this can help us a lot to exercise our energy given from above, there are some hobbies that helpful such as spending time reading God's word and spent time praying that we know God is truly alive on earth thru reading God's word and praying. better we do exercise this kind of hobbies, its one way of building your relationship to God.
Thanks for writing in! Unfortunately, I am not so far in my studies yet that reading the Bible relaxes me! That probably sounds very bad, but it is true. I am very much on a quest for greater understanding of faith, and right now, it's a complicated struggle. Who knows, though... one day I might get there!
