Interactive Stories
I wrote a newsletter on Interactive Stories some time ago ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (January 30, 2008)" ), which focused on tips to creating a successful Interactive Story. A recent contest, however, has got me thinking about adding to Interactive Stories. So let's focus on that!
A step-by-step guide to adding a chapter to an Interactive Story
Step 1: Find an Interactive!
Using the navigational tool on the left side of each WDC page, click on "Browse by Type" and then "Interactive Stories" at the bottom of the first section. This will give you a list of public Interactive Stories.
Interactives are sorted by "recently modified first." Try sorting by "newly created first" to find the newest interactives!
Interactive Story Filter - Decide whether or not you'd like to filter out the most common topics. By filtering, you'll get a more diverse list of interactives.
Step 2: Read the Rules
After you've chosen a story, read the rules carefully. There may be limits to chapter length or rules regarding content (like rating, topic, etc.), and you'll want to make sure you follow the host's rules!
If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact the story's owner!
Step 3: Read the Chapters
Read through the story. It'll give you an idea of where to go. The whole point of an interactive story is to inspire the next chapter!
If possible, read as much of the interactive story as possible. Some stories, though, have hundreds of entries, so you'll want to at least read along one story line until you get to the "Submit your Chapter" screen.
Feel free to send comments on chapters! The other contributors will appreciate the feedback, but remember to email them directly (including a link to the chapter - use {{chapter:#######}). Any ratings and reviews will be sent to the item's owner, not to individual chapter writers.
Step 4: Write your Chapter
Make your addition! Just remember to follow the rules, and leave enough open-ended options for others to continue the story. Remember, the idea is to inspire the next person!
Try not to end the story too quickly. Leave enough open to let others continue the story. The longer the interactive story, the more creative it can become!
Grammar counts! Remember, this chapter is a representative of yourself. A reader may decide to click on your portfolio based upon a chapter addition, so be sure to proofread your writing! (Also, once you add your chapter, you cannot edit it! Only the item's owner can edit chapters.)
Choose whether to be notified when others add to the story. It can be fun to see how your own writing can inspire others!
Step 5: Rate and Review
Don't forget to rate and review the Interactive Story! Let the owner know what you think of their creation!
Interactive Stories can be difficult to review because the host often doesn't write the majority of the story, so be sure to keep that in mind in your review!
One final note:
If the owner of an Interactive Story deletes the item, your additions will also be deleted. If you want to protect your writing, make sure you keep a copy for yourself.
Interactive Stories can be excellent writing exercises! They often force a writer to think outside their comfort zones and to think creatively. Above all, they're fun!
Always keep on writing!

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (April 20, 2011)" ), discussed Learning.
I've learned there is always something fun to do. ~ BIG BAD WOLF is Howling
Great newsletter. I can tell you that for 38 years as the teacher in a high school classroom, never a day went by that I did not learn as well. I believe that being open to the students and listening to them makes the job so darn wonderful. I miss it so much, but my students still stay in touch. Two are coming down for a sleep out next month. ~ Rixfarmgirl
Great advice!!
