Letter from the editor

I was really excited a few years ago when several "new age" videos came out; all of them disappointments. There were no secret lurking therein, no lost knowledge waiting to be found. The entire concept of Law of Attraction boiled down to "think happy thoughts." Therefore, everything you ever wanted to know about being rich and successful you could learn watching Sesame Street.

That's not a magical paradigm or an old mystery exposed to the modern world. It's basically common sense passed down from our parents and our life experience. The idea that happiness equals good health and success is not a secret formula of the Freemasons. It's more like the advice your grandmother gave that seemed quaint at the time.

If you've ever been sick, you've heard that "laughter heals". If you've ever held a grudge, someone has probably told you "let it go", or "it's not worth it". And more than likely at some point you've been hit with the Eleanor Roosevelt quote: "No one has the right to make you feel small without your consent."

These are snippets of our cultural cliches that prove a truth: the mind is more powerful than we know. In sickness and in health.

My husband calls this "magical thinking", as if positive thoughts were equivalent to sparkly unicorns, leprechauns, and Bigfoot. He might want to check out the Mayo clinic, where he would find scientific articles linking stress to illness and positive thinking to positive results in work as well as overall life.

In New Age terms, one would say "thoughts are energy". But that's a meaningless designation without explanation. The easiest example is the smile.

Walk down the street and smile at everyone. Young, old, people with dogs, people with strollers. Ninety percent of the time you'll get a smile back. This exchange of energy (without even touching) leaves a positive mark on both parties. Not only does a smile make you feel better, but you'll spread that happiness far beyond your physical body as the recipient accepts the smile and gives it back. Two moods improved with a simple gesture, a gesture most likely shared, creating a ripple effect as good moods spread. It's such a simple concept that even babies innately understand the power of a smile.

Conversely, our bad moods affect others too. Because emotional states tend to cause emotional reactions. Burst in the door grumbling about your awful day and watch your spouse or child pick up on that energy and mirror it with a cross word or a whine. Or shield themselves instinctively with crossed arms, to protect the physical chest and the emotional heart. Or leave the room to escape the negativity.

Are there limits? Yes and no. People have claimed their cancer cured by sitting in a garden all day, breathing in the scents and sounds and releasing all their stress and worry.. On the other hand, no amount of positive thinking will restore a missing limb. But an upbeat attitude at the doctor's office can lessen the pain. And more studies prove that even patients under anesthesia who are supposedly "out of it" benefit from spoken encouragement or recited meditation.

To a lesser extent, we "talk" ourselves into things all the time. The voice in your head that says you'll die can be overridden by the voice that says bungee jumping would be a blast.

From a note on the door that says "a great day awaits" to outright hypnosis, we can change the patterns of our brain. It's more than happy thoughts, it's the idea that thinking, planning, dreaming leads to doing. Keep thinking, writing, and reaching for your dreams.

"Hypnosis is merely your mind being a very relaxed state. In that relaxed state you are open to suggestions, but the mind must be willing. I cannot make you do anything you do not want to do."
