Newletters--Information for the Masses
Writing.Com currently hosts thirteen official newsletters that are available to ALL members. One of the duties of your Moderators and Senior Moderators is to prepare these newsletters for your perusal. I use that term duties loosely since writing a newsletter is a blast--at least for me. They are:
Action/Adventure For Authors Poetry
Comedy Horror/Scary Romance/Love
Contests & Activities Mystery Short Stories
Drama Noticing Newbies Spiritual
Fantasy
Of course, you don't need to remember them; you can find this list at "Newsletter Area" and selecting Writing.Com Newsletter Archives. Also located in this archive area are links to the current week's newsletters, and to all the older issues by genre. New folks (and many older members) may not know that a Sci-Fi newsletter was one of the original official newletters. Check out the archives for those old issues--you may find something of interest.
Make a resolution to take a little time each week and look back through some older issues of your favorite newsletter. I've dscovered things about Writing.Com I never knew. Don't let the fact that you write in (or read) a particular genre keep you from reading other newsletters. There's an enormous amount of wisdom from some very talented writers in those back issues. And who knows from where that inspiration for your next story or novel will come.
Many newsletters have full-time editors who appear once every four weeks. Perhaps you'll discover a favorite editor, someone whose style just reaches you. If you've been touched by the subject of a particular issue, take a moment to let that editor know. It's easy to do--just submit your comments in the window at the bottom of the newsletter. We love to hear from you.
You can subscribe to one, two, or all the official newsletters by clicking on your My Account icon (the first of the six vertical icons in the upper left corner), selecting the Options tab, and opening Manage Newsletter Subscriptions.
As you spend more time on WDC, you'll discover other newsletters of interest. Written and maintained by various members, these specialized newsletters are unofficial in nature. That is, they are written and maintained by individuals having no official status with Writing.Com other than regular membership. Many groups have their own newsletters providing information about events, contests, classes, reviewing sessions, and just general happenings within that group to its members. Some of these newsletters include:
| | Invalid Item This item number is not valid. #1595627 by Not Available. | | | Invalid Item This item number is not valid. #662215 by Not Available. |
Some newsletters are more private in nature, focusing on a specific activity, such as Leger~ 's "Invalid Item" . The reasons to create a newsletter are as varied as the members on WDC. Suffice it to say, there is no shortage to the creativity members exercise to "get the word out" on some aspect of Writing.Com.

An Upgrade Moment
Each issue I write will highlight a feature available only to paid members at various levels. With so many nooks, crannies, and features available to members, one can hardly comprehend everything. Even older members can't track all the changes WDC has undergone over the past two years. Most are explained in " Writing.Com 101" , and are marked with a symbol indicating to which membership level the feature applies. You may see something you didn't know existed, or something you just haven't tried before.
You can compare all the features available to a given membership level at " Compare Free and Paid Membership Benefits" .
This month, I'd like to discuss the Groups. The basic reference for this Upgraded and above level feature is "Group" . It contains several links on the mechanics of creating and maintaining groups.
Any member from Registered User and up with an Upgraded membership can create a group. Only the owner (creator) of a group needs to have an Upgraded membership. Some groups have co-leaders or a number of senior helpers that run the group. Persons in leadership roles other than the owner can be any membership level.
Section 2: Content and Access Control Settings is a critical part in creating and editing your group. This sets both Access and Membership restrictions for your group, as well as the ability to create and edit group-only items. Whether your group has two or 2500 members, these restrictions set the parameters in which every member operates.
A couple of things to remember. Access Restrictions takes precedence over the Membership Restrictions when identifying membership in the group. Say you set the Access level to the group you're creating, and the Membership level at Upgraded or above. Any member you add to the group with a Basic or lower membership level will still have access to the group. The same applies to the ability to create and edit Group-only items. If your identify your group under the Group Edit Access and set the Group Edit Level at a specific level, any group member with that particular level assigned by the owner no matter what WDC membership level he or she holds may edit Group-only items.
Take some time to read through all the related Group entries before creating your group. It's time well worth your while.
