It is February. Valentines’ Day is on the horizon and since the middle of January, stores have displayed gifts to give to our “love interest”. These gifts got me to thinking about romance in science fiction and fantasy. While some readers avoid science fiction novel with a blend of romance, I think a little romance makes the novel interesting. This brings me to the question of “love interest”.
Does your character need a lover interest? The answer to this question can be both yes and no, because it depends on the plot, the culture of the novel or short story, and the author’s preferences. A love interest can carry the plot forward, introduce complications, and reveal the personality of the main character. A love interest may also reveal the protagonist as sympathetic, unsympathetic, and intriguing or a combination of those qualities.
One of the things a writer needs to know when blending romance and science fiction is how to write a good love scene. Especially if you want the scene in the novel because it will, either enhance the reader’s enjoyment of the novel or cause the reader to close book immediately and go on to something else. Of course, you do not have to put a love scene in the novel you can simply suggest what is happening or about to happen.
When you do include a “love interest” or a little romance then make sure you write a character sketch for the romantic interest. In that, sketch say why the person is attracted to the main character and what attracted the protagonist to his or her romantic interest.
