Dystopian fiction is the opposite of Utopian fiction. While both types of speculative fiction explore the political and social organization of society, dystopian fiction focuses on the darker aspects. All right, that is a simplified explanation of the subject.
According to Wikipedia.org, there are five basic characteristics of dystopian fiction. These characteristics are (1) the background, (2) a protagonist, (3) some type of conflict, (4) a climax and conclusion, and (5) destruction. The destruction of this type of society may be lean more toward subversion then complete destruction.
There are numerous elements of society and cultural that is useful in creating a background for dystopian fiction. Chose a component, carry it to an extreme, and put it in a future setting. Write the background, give the story protagonist and write. I would like to read any of you dystopian fiction stories.

Mr. Midnight writes: Great timing for this newsletter. Im actually working on a dystopian Fiction that deals with the dynamic of a trio and what comes to be called the 'Triangle-Fallout'.
the three began working together more often. WarFairy developed an intimate and flirty relationship with both of them. The two young bucks bumped heads and kicked a lot of crap into the air in the process, between the three. When the crap settled the clan fell apart as all three fell into isolation from one another. Months later Pedro and Merc admitted to the value of their yang/yang force. Merc and Pedro came to a 'bro's before hoes' type agreement. They team up once again. later they reestablish contact with WarFairy. All three eventually built a bridge over the situation and have been working closely together as friends ever since. From there on in the situation has been dubbed 'the triangle-fallout'; homage to the phrase 'love triangle' which didn't quite fit their unique situation at the time.
BIG BAD WOLF is Howling writes: Between Monster soldiers, cowboys, and "escorts" I think I'm blended. I also like some romance in my stories.
bertiebrite hoping for peace writes: I have been struggling with this concept for a while now. I have a love interest in a fantasy story and have not had any inspiration as to how to progress with my hero who is aloof, but is attracted to the girl he meets. I decided to take it on slowly and extend the story to include vignettes about their meetings and growing attachment. It is vital to the story line that these two show emotions for each other earlier in the story than I did. This approach works well, and the reader is clearer on these two people's relationship.
jim1184 writes: Good News letter. Great topic.I do prefer blended novels. It seems the ones I am writing are also blended. At least the two Fantasy ones are. Romance is the topic I struggle with most. I have tried reading romance novels, so far they have not helped me much. I will be reading all your editor picks looking for teaching moments.I have one more romance author to read she is also retired Navy, so I have hopes there. Thanks Jim
Do you have any dystopian or utopian stories?
