Motivation

The main motivation of a romance or love story is for the two characters to fall in love, or to resolve the difficulties they are experiencing in their relationship. But within this major motivation are two sub-motivators which are equally as important. They may seem, on the surface, to be the same thing, but there are differences.

*Heart* 1> What is the motivation to fall in love?
*Heart* 2> What is a character prepared to do for love?

One, or both of these aspects, is essential to a love story. Motivation is that essence of a story that drives the characters to act. It will dictate how they react to obstacles, how they speak, and it heightens the reader's investment. If there is little motivation for the character, there is little motivation for the reader to continue on through the story.

1> What is the motivation to fall in love?

In this type of story, one or both characters overcome obstacles in order for them to come together by the end of the story. Whether it be human influence, distance, finance, attitude or misconceptions (i.e. some emotional hindrance). The motivation to bring them to a point of loving must be believable and fitting. Would a hard prisoner find motivation to love an exotic film star? (You could build a case for lust here.) But a romance is more likely to develop between him and the woman Prison Chaplain who continues to visit the men's prison despite protocol and opposition.

What motivates the two chosen characters to fall in love? Does she help him deal with deep emotional issues, or perhaps he helps her with some secret need that makes her flout the customs? Maybe they are flung together in a prison break gone wrong.

2> What is a character prepared to do for love?

In this story, something is keeping the two lovers apart and the story unfolds as they try to reunite. Into this motivation fit the classic kidnap and hostage scenarios. What other motivations might influence the characters' actions? Illness, money, accident...

What will they be prepared to do -- kill, die, steal, lie? There would not be much of a story if our hero bowed to the command of his beloved's father that they never see each other again. But if he was to set about proving himself to the father by becoming an employee and earning trust, we would then have a measure of his motivation, and the setting for a battle to win his lady.

How strong are your character's motivations? Can they be stronger. Is the ante important enough? Is it realistic?

Thanks for reading,
