Trying New Things
or How I got back into My Little Pony
I was a child of the 80s, a girl, so of course I loved My Little Pony. But this isn't the story of my childhood, this is the story of how I rediscovered My Little Pony as an adult. (Don't worry, there's a reward at the end!) And it relates to WDC Contests & Activities, too, I promise!
There is a musician that I really like in a genre of music I never thought I'd like - rap. Not just any rap, though - nerdcore rap. What is nerdcore rap? Well, it's hip-hop style music about nerd topics, like Star Wars and action figures and video games. The most mainstream, popular nerdcore rap artist would be Weird Al Yankovich. (Nerdcore isn't always humorous parodies, but sometimes it is)
Anyway, my favorite nerdore hip-hop artist, mc chris, offers a free new song for his fans every year on April Fool's Day. This year's song was about, you guessed it, My Little Pony. And I loved it!
I hadn't realized there was a new cartoon show, and I was more than a little nervous about watching it. Sure I loved things like My Little Pony when I was a girl, but as an adult, it would surely be too cutesy, right?
I watched the first episode, and thought, "This is funny! It's cute and you can tell it's for kids, but it's got some good moments, too." After a couple more episodes, my opinion changed to, "Best show ever!"
My point is, you can't be afraid to try things because of pre-conceived notions. I don't know if it's getting older, but I'm starting to try new things. I used to say, "I like every genre of music, except for rap and country." Well, now I've started liking some of those, too, and they're actually quite good! I was afraid to watch a TV show, thinking it would be too childish, silly & girly, and it turns out, I really love it! (And so do a lot of adults, including men. The new My Little Pony cartoon has a huge following!)
So, as a reward for reading the story of how I re-discovered My Little Pony (I still have a few people reading, right?), I'm offering a gift point prize to anyone who embraces their fears and enters a contest from now until my next newsletter!
Rules
One entry per member. (If more than one entry is given, only one will count)
To enter, fill out the feedback form at the bottom of this newsletter. Include a link (b-item, c-item, etc.) of the contest you entered. If no link is given, no credit will be given for the entry. (I have to be able to find your entry!) You can include a link to your entry, but it's not required.
Prizes
1,000 gift points just for entering!
If you include a link to the item you entered, I'll do my best to send a review of them item your way!
When I first joined WDC, and I see this of a lot of new members, I entered TONS of contests. My writing might not have been the best (I came here to improve), but I wasn't afraid to put myself and my work out there. Over the years, though, I've found myself more selective and perhaps a little afraid to take those leaps. So I'm going to be taking part in my own challenge, too! I'm pledging to enter at least one contest before my next newsletter! I'll have to do it, because I plan on writing about the experience in my next newsletter!
Happy Writing and Happy Entering!

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (March 21, 2012)" ), discussed how to get noticed on WDC.
I think this is a great newsletter. In order to get my items noticed on WdC, I post in the Shameless Plug Page and the Contests@Writing.Com forum. I also try to review a lot. Once again, great NL. Write on! ~ glo-stick
Good points and thanks!!
I do several things- review, take part in activities, chat, interactives, campfires, and a few other such things. ~ BIG BAD WOLF is Howling
Good ideas!
I don't have a lot of time to spend online, being a student, but I try to review when I can and I enter the occasional contest. Contests are great ways to get your writing noticed as well as make friends and get multiple people to read your writing. I know a lot of contests that also offer reviews to all participates, win or lose. Nicole ~ Unwritten Insanity
Good for you! A lot of us have limited time online, and it's great to see you using the most of your time!
I love the advice given in this issue of the newsletter, Spidey! Participation is key on Writing.Com. That not only gets you noticed, but isn't giving and receiving feedback on writing the reason most of us joined the site? ~ Diane
Thanks! I couldn't agree more!
Absolutely fabulous newsletter, Miss Spidey. I couldn't agree with you more. I'm coming up on my 4th anniversary in a couple months, but I still remember one person who welcomed me to WDC; she's the reason I decided to stay AND participate. Your last point is SO important. ~ JACE
Questions to think about:
Do you enter more or less contests than when you first joined WDC? What keeps you from entering contests & activities? |
