Time for a Little Spring Cleaning

Okay, so it's not spring, but spring cleaning can take place any time of year.

Despite the soaring temperatures (106° today) my husband and I decided it was time for a little decluttering, so last weekend we hosted a garage sale. It was our first garage sale since marrying in 1989, and although we walked away with a little more than $1700.00 it'll be the last garage sale we ever have. Some people refused to pay more than $1.00 for brand new shoes with the $39.95 price tags still attached while others tried to stuff things into their pockets without paying for them at all. Needless to say by the time 4:55 p.m. Saturday afternoon rolled around my husband was counting down the seconds until he could shut the garage door and put the whole miserable experience behind him.

I was a little surprised by how much work preparing for a garage sale really is, but I found the purging process cathartic and therapeutic. It felt good to rid myself of things no longer of use to me, and it got me thinking about how symbolic the whole thing was--how disencumbering ourselves of attitudes, emotions, and belief systems that no longer serve us (anger, pride, resentment, envy, hatred, jealousy, lust, greed) is cathartic and therapeutic for our souls.

When we let go negativity and turn our backs on habitual, repetitive, toxic thought processes, it's like a huge burden has been lifted from our shoulders and our spirits are free to love, free to give, free to accept graciously all the blessings and beauty life has to offer. We want to give back. We empathize. Our hearts soar at the prospect of helping our fellow man because we see our similarities rather than our differences; we are all just human beings trying to make it through another day as painlessly as possible.

Are you plagued by old attitudes that no longer serve you? Are antiquated ideas contaminating your psyche and preventing you from being the person you want to be? Grab some boxes, toss away the offensive, and open the windows of your soul to allow the light of love to shine in.

A little spring cleaning never hurt anyone.

Thank you for reading.

Ask & Answer

The following is in response to "Spiritual Newsletter (July 11, 2012)Open in new Window.:

~HarvestSilverMoon~ Author Icon says, "Thanks for writing this encouraging and thoughtful newsletter. I know that it comes at just the right time and place for many people." Thank YOU! I appreciate your kindness. *Heart*

yuhuguru Author Icon says, "Thanks for the wonderful newsletter, Shannon! I have had some of the same experiences with comments from family members. I usually tell them I don't want to hear those comments. They don't make them as much now. It took years, but some have even apologized. I like that church too. It is nice for people to learn to coexist." Yes, it certainly is. Thank you for reading. *Peace*

Michaelmountain:spring hope Author Icon says, "I have a question. Should the newsletter feature authors that haven't been on the site for months to years. I realize summer is a challenging time so different criteria apply. It is hard to have a dialogue with someone who isn't available." I usually try to select items that were written by current/active WDC members, but if I find a particular piece that speaks to the topic better than anything else I will use it regardless of how long it's been since the user logged on. This does make it difficult to interact with the author, but I'll go with it anyway if the pros outweigh the cons.Thank you for taking the time to read and comment! *Delight*

Being Diane Author Icon says, "It's so easy for me to go back to my childhood faith and make me remember what a spiritual thinking child I was; on my own. I plan on getting back there. I want to make a space upstairs where I don't even have to go in the front door to come in my home." It's funny how embedded those early teachings are, isn't it? They are deep-rooted and really do shape and mold us into the adults we turn out to be whether we realize it or not. And I LOVE your "space upstairs" idea. Simply wonderful! *Thumbsup*

ElizabethHayes-DaughterofIAM Author Icon says, "I really enjoyed your Spiritual NL this week. Quite frankly, it stepped on my toes. I have the tendency to always please others and I let what others say get to me. To the point low self esteem. When one hears something enough, they believe it after a while. I have been that way since childhood. Something I am working on. Thanks for the wakeup call." Aw, thank you for beautiful response. I'm glad you found the NL helpful. And don't believe anyone who says you are anything less than wonderful. You are a beautiful, one-of-a-kind, divine creation of God, and don't you forget it. *Angel*

Steve adding writing to ntbk. Author Icon says, "Thanks for sharing and please continue. Told those I reviewed they were located in your excellent newsletter.
The piece I've submitted is a devotional that ministered to me as I wrote it and continues to minister to others as they read it."
Thanks, Steve! I so appreciate your ongoing encouragement and support. Thank you, my friend. And please see below for Steve's devotional. *TulipR*
