"Vampires, real vampires, didn't nibble on the necks of nubile young virgins. They tore people to pieces and sucked the blood out of the chunks. "

*Fleurdelis* Kidnapped! Giselle Speaks 10.09.12 *Fleurdelis*

This month, my victim is Annette Author Icon who is a wonderfully talented author. I encourage you all to check out her port and all the items we've featured below. *Wink* I hope you enjoy getting to know her as much as I did.

*Person* Tell us about your experience training for your local CERT  Open in new Window. this past September.

For three weeks, I would go to a local fire station on Saturdays from 8:00 am until 5:00pm. Fire fighters taught a class and then we'd have some hands on activities. The last class, which is the one from the picture, was the day when we got to take out fires and "save" a group of people who were dressed up as victims of an earthquake. It was fun, especially knowing all those people were just playing sick. It showed me how dumb people become when everybody wants to "do something," but they don't want to listen to a leader - or be the leader. The whole experience was great and I can only encourage anybody to take that class in their community.

*Person* Have you ever read or seen yourself as a character in a book or a movie?

Usually, I would see myself as the male hero since identifying with the girl was not cool according to my parents. To them, girls were always portrayed as victims and to identify with those was a sign of being dumb. Which was also not allowed. So, I thought of myself as the male hero.

*Person* List 3 books you just recently read and would recommend?

I read City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments): ($10.78 from Amazon.Com) by Cassandra Clare. It's book five in her Mortal Instruments series with book six still to come out. I like that whole series. It's got teen angst, mystical creatures, and loads of action adventure with - actually - a strong girl lead. (I guess I would have been allowed to identify with her minus the part where she loves her co-hero. *Pthb*
I read (in one go) all four books in the The Blades of the Rose Bundle: Warrior, Scoundrel, Rebel, & Stranger: (Available at Amazon.Com) by Zoe Archer. They are romance novels with a supernatural twist. Again, strong women, loads of action. Funny, because I liked the sensual parts in those, but at times they annoyed me because I wanted to know who the story goes on.

*Person* Something I ask all my interviewees. What scares you?

Zombies. Well, not really, but they gross me out, so I don't enjoy reading about them. Otherwise, I find people who do insane things the worst.

*Person* Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I guess Cassandra Clare  Open in new Window. is my favorite author, if I had to pick one. I really like what she did with Mortal Instruments, but I have a very hard time getting into her other series Infernal Devices. So, instead of saying that I have a favorite author, I'd rather choose to say I have favorite books. Same with those four books by Zoe Archer  Open in new Window. I read. I really really liked the second book in the series best, but the others were fun to read also. When I was younger, I enjoyed everything by Stephen King  Open in new Window. until I came to the Dark Tower  Open in new Window., at which point he lost me and I haven't liked any of his new works since.

*Person* What about the horror/scary genre that interested you enough to create your current Halloween contest?

Ah, yes. This is connected to the blog entry you're linking to in the next question. "Not So Scary Halloween Contest -- CLOSEDOpen in new Window. was going to have a 2012 round, but then I realized I really need to take care of other non-WdC things this year. So, the contest is not going to happen. I got three entries, reviewed those and sent out two merit badges, but won't keep the contest going for this year.

*Person* Your most recent blog entry was short and simple. "Invalid EntryOpen in new Window.. Tell us about what prompted the entry and what that means for you.

I've come to the realization that if I ever want to get my own book finished and published, I will have to work on it with more gusto. As it stands right now, I can't even get all of the things I have to do into the week without being in a constant haze of sleep deprivation. So, even when I would have time to write, I am too tired to form a coherent thought or be creative. So, simplifying means to stay active within this site in the things that are the most important to me. That is writing newsletters for contests and activities, participating in "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window. because that is the only place where I'm getting real indepth reviews for my novel, and still running "The Simple Fundraiser Open in new Window., which is not too time consuming and actually a great way to help RAOK and other groups to raise funds.

*Person* What is the hardest part of writing for you? Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

The number one hardest thing is to find the time to write.
The number two hardest thing is to accept the story I have and let it be the final draft. I just can't get myself to let the story be what it is. Too many ideas want to be a part of it, at the same time, I forget ideas for lack of time to write them down.

I hope you enjoyed this look into the mind of a fellow author. I encourage you to read the entire interview here : "Invalid EntryOpen in new Window..

If you would like to share your thoughts, please send me a note using the box at the bottom of this newsletter.

Technology is advancing at an ever-increasing pace. Can it be taken too far?
by Tom Buck Author Icon

Excerpt:
I'm John Young. My NetLink number is 635769-22-1. I'm all alone now, and I only have a short time left to write my story. The clock on my desk softly ticks away the seconds, reminding me of my destiny.

It's just past midnight, so technically I'm beginning the celebration of my forty-second birthday. However, we haven't honored such occasions recently. I'm not looking for sympathy. I just want to document what's happened to me and my family.

My recall is sharp right now, but that won't last much longer. I spent most of yesterday going through the journals I've kept throughout most of my adult life. I shed quite a few tears in the process, but I've earmarked a number of pages to help jog my memory. Sleep is no longer a friend, so I plan to write until I finish this story.

The Faithful Servant Open in new Window. [18+]
Summoned by careless words, he loves them all until the very end.
by Adriana Noir Author Icon

Excerpt:
A late summer breeze stirs, carrying her intoxicating smell across the room. Hints of orchid and vanilla infiltrate my senses. Vibrant and seductive, it stirs something within me. She moves to her dresser and turns on the radio. Haunting, melodic notes waft through the night, a serenade for the dead. My eyes drift shut for a brief moment as the music speaks to me. I resist the urge to reach out and touch her, my unwitting bride. I remain rooted, content to watch from the shadows. What is a mere moment when compared to the promise of eternity? Our time approaches with swift peril.

The sound of rustling silk interrupts my fantasy as she turns the covers down. Her slender hand lingers over the mound of pillows. Delicate features twist into a mask of uncertainty. A distinct aroma fills the air, the smell of fear.

Dream House Open in new Window. [13+]
You'd better hope it's never yours...
by Cubby Author Icon

Excerpt:
The house dream came every October for the past three years. It began on the first day of the month and ended on the last. Chloe didn't know why, but at this point, she was glad it came only one month of the year. The dream was more like a series of events taking place at the same house.

In the beginning, it wasn't so bad. In fact, she enjoyed the dream so much, she looked forward to sleep. That was before the horror took over. Chloe had escaped several times, but only because her husband was there to wake her up at each point of terror.

Tonight Chloe slept alone.

This is the Best Trap, Yet! Open in new Window. [18+]
An amusing tale of terror.
by Ẃeβ࿚ẂỉԎḈĥmas Author Icon

Excerpt:
Every time Halloween comes around, I plan the most innocuous looking staging to trap some horrid stranger into my chamber.

Hello, my name is Tara. My friends like to call me "Tara-Rizer", because I am a frightfully prolific hunter. I am a diminutive, dark pixie, who sold my soul to the fiery pit's gatekeeper. Each year I am required to feed upon the spirit of a stranger and frighten him into madness, or death. Extra points are given for soul harvesting. Last year I made it to fifth place on the point tally sheet. This year I shall be the winning Pixie of Darkness.

Mr. Moon, Shine on Me Open in new Window. [18+]
The full moon brings out the worst in families. Very short (800 word) horror story.
by Max Griffin 🏳️‍🌈 Author Icon

Excerpt:
Mr. Moon is full tonight. I can just see him if I stand on the table by my bed, on my tippy-toes. When you stand like that, you can look out of the basement window and see our backyard. I pull on my chains so I can see Mr. Moon better. He's just sneaking over Mr. Wolfson's roof next door, just like he's playing peek-a-boo. I don't play peek-a-boo anymore. That's for babies. Mr. Wolfson used to let me play with his puppy, though. He's nice to me. His puppy gave me kisses sometimes.

My swing set is in the backyard. It's all shiny in the moonlight. It looks real pretty when Mr. Moon shines on it. I wish Mr. Moon would shine on me.

I wish I could play on my swing set. But not tonight. Mr. Moon is full tonight.

Invalid Item Open in new Window. []

by A Guest Visitor

Excerpt:
Kathy had forgotten when the habit started. On her walk past him, Kathy handed him a dollar or a hot beverage from the coffee shop down the street. Sometimes she gave him a piece of fruit or a granola bar.

They never spoke a word to each other. It wasn't needed somehow. Every evening he watched her come toward him. As she leaned closer to hand him the goody of the day he stretched out his seven-fingered hand. There was no thumb. He had seven fingers on each hand. Kathy wondered if the lack of an opposing thumb and being labeled a freak for his deformity was part of the cause for the way he lived. Upon receipt of his treat he watched her walk home.

Invalid Item Open in new Window. []

by A Guest Visitor

Excerpt:
The wind howled outside, tearing at the trees, banging shutters to and fro, an angry vortex of sound. The rain came, torrents pounding against the roofs and windows. Dogs cowered in their kennels, windows were closed, and curtains drawn against the tempestuous elements raging outside. Branches cracked and crashed to the ground. I heard none of it.

Cocooned in my studio and locked into my own demons, the raging outside was nothing compared to the emotions that swept through me as I frenziedly splashed paint onto the canvas in front of me. I had to hold on the visions converging and crashing in my head, before they fragmented and flared away into the darkness - lost forever.

~*Ax* The Future of Fright *Ax*~

Invalid Item Open in new Window. []

by A Guest Visitor

Excerpt:
Trepidation was the best word I could use to describe entering the study of Edgar Allan Poe. My heart racing and my palms sweating, the empty room was enough to fill me with a sense of unease. The night itself was not helping my demeanor. A loud clap of thunder brought my gaze to the window.

Lightening flashed, revealing the form of a raven battering against the study window. His loud shriek of a caw making me ears ring even as I jumped in fright. My hand lifted, covering the point where my heart beat a wild rhythm in my chest. The steady kathunk kathunk of that organ doing little to set me at ease or prove that I was indeed still among the living.
