By now, I suspect you've all heard the saying, Write about what you know. Everyone--and I mean you ... and you ... and YOU--has experiences about which you can write. I'll bet some of them were funny.
Humor is one of the basic necessities of life, and we all need humor in our lives. Laughing is great for our souls and our well-being. Y'all are writers--write about those experiences. Spend a little time thinking about various facets of your life. I believe some incident will occur to you. Perhaps some interaction with a sibling. or some action you attempted that went awry will manifest itself. Whatever, wrap your mind around it and jot down everything you can remember about it.
Recently, one of the contests held in honor of WDC's 12th Birthday asked for entries about one's favorite birthday. An incident I hadn't thought about in many years came to mind regarding my fifth birthday. As I thought about it, I was surprised not only to remember small details about the event, but also some of the names of those involved.
As I was writing about my adventure, I realized others may have had similar incidents in their lives. It occurred to me that just writing about a humorous event may not be quite enough--you must relate it to your audience. Touch your readers on a basic level and your atempts at humor will be transformed, expanded, shared. Open your mind to the possibilities. We all can relate to others from events in our own lives.
Of course, humor doesn't exist solely in your memories. Just look around. As you celebrate Thanksgiving this year, don't just count your blessings; look for those little nuggets of humor that will enrich your life. Humor is everywhere you are.
