Presenting ... Yourself!

Last month I talked about putting your story's best foot forward. You want to make sure your title and item description is both informative and provocative enough to entice a reader.

Hand in hand with that is how you present yourself. Every member of Writing.Com is provided with space for their Portfolio--a place to store and showcase one's writings, the ability to post and receive reviews, and many other features too numerous to restate here. For a complete listing of features by membership levels, check out "Compare Free and Paid Membership BenefitsOpen in new Window..

In your Portfolio tab is a link called Manage Portfolio Header. Clicking on this link opens three sections designed to publicize you to other members AND the world. I submit the most important of these sections is the BioBlock. This is your "Cover Letter"--a chance to tell the world about you in a short, concise manner. You can be serious, witty, tongue-in-cheek, or hilarious. You have 650 characters to condense your essence into something that begs readers to check out your Portfolio . You must maintain a rating of 13+ or lower, and may use WritingML to enhance your description. Just remember some special characters and WritingML tags may use extra of those limited characters.

The remaining two sections include a Portfolio Cover Image and Highlighted Items. Covers are images that Upgraded members and above may use to dress up their BioBlock. See "CoversOpen in new Window. for more on these. Highlighted Items are links to up to three items you would like to display to persons looking at your Portfolio. Just place the actual numeric item ID number (with no tag information) in one of the boxes provided.

When you've finished entering your information, click Submit Update, and check to see that the Update Success message is shown above.

The next important section is your Biography tab (the third tab). Clicking on the Manage Biography opens several areas, including a place to upload your picture or other image of your choosing. This image is available to everyone and must conform to posted instructions. You can also list up to five highlighted items from your or someone else's Portfolio, again using the numeric ID numbers only.

Finally, and most important, you have boxes to post more information about yourself--your writing style; your writing and reading interests; any WDC groups in which you are a member; favorite genres, authors, books, or internet links; and other informational windows. Use only those areas that you feel comfortable displaying. Don't forget to save your information.

Consider using this tab as soon as you're able. Many members use this information to seek out members with similar interests and writing styles to form collaborative writing efforts, or just to start a conversation. I've met many interesting folks this way, and are always on the lookout for a new friend.

Now is the best time to take stock of your Port. You can never take back that first impression. The BioBlock and Biography tab are the portals into you as a writer. Conversely, don't wait too long to complete them, or you'll be passed by as upwards of 200 new members join each and every day.

In a future issue, I'll discuss making your Portfolio window look its best as you start adding items. This need will be readily apparent when you decide ten items are not enough for you and you upgrade your membership for more space. *Wink*
