Groups II - Participation

No one took me up on my offer from last month's issue, so I'm just going to continue with my own thoughts. *Laugh*

With so many groups to join, covering all areas from common interest : needs : support : fun
it can be tempting to become a 'group fanatic'. And by all means, join as few or as many as what fits your needs and stage in your life.

Before you join:

1. Do you have the time to invest?

Groups are created by members who want to provide a service or communicate with like-minded people. It is highly frustrating when no one takes an active role after joining a group. The more that is involved in being a member, the more time it will take up. If time is an issue for you, select 1-3 groups which you are keen on and dedicate to being an active member of those groups. Spreading yourself too thin will only stress you out and disappoint the group owner.

2. Are you prepared to meet the criteria for membership?

Some groups require a certain amount of participation to become a member or stay as a member. The requirements range from doing reviews, completing assignments, or posting in a forum, and you may find yourself removed from the group if you do not follow the rules. Having these types of criteria help a group owner to manage the members so there is no 'dead weight'.

Most group owners will give a fair amount of flexibility, as we all have lives to lead. A group owner will generally also encourage, understand and give warnings of inactivity.

3. Is the group going to meet some need or interest?

You are more likely to be active in groups which are relevant for your life at the time. Maybe you're a teen struggling with life and finding time to write. A group for teens might be more applicable than a general group with writing prompts. Take time to look through the many groups available and then join one that looks like it will provide the kind of support you need or desire.

Being a member:

1. Keep the group forum in your favourites

This will enable you to easily see when new posts are made. Visiting regularly is not only less time consuming but it means you will not miss opportunities to participate in group contests, answer someone's need or just keep a handle on what's going on. To put the forum in your favourites, open the forum, then click on the wee hand symbol near the top that is beside the envelope and printer icons.

2. Post a 'hello' message in the forum. Include some brief information about yourself, related to the group's theme or just a simple bio. It helps to form bonds across the group and allows people to give you a more personal welcome into the group. People set up groups because they are basically friendly people. Don't be afraid to jump on in.

3. Post in the forum regularly.

Just say 'hi', respond to someone else's post, or keep people updated that you will be off-line for a while...whatever it may be, keeping a regular appearance up will give you more visibility within the site. You are more likely to be noticed and read.

4. Review your group memberships from time to time.

Are there groups you no longer participate in? Have your needs changed and a current group is no longer applicable? Group owners will not be upset if you self-delete from the group. I do recommend a courtesy email to the owner or post in the forum. The owner and other members will appreciate it.

To self-delete, go to the pull down menu "Member Tools" then choose "My Groups". Find the group you wish to be removed from on the page and click on "Leave Group" Follow the instructions and you're done. *Smile*

Thanks for reading.
