Ask the Right Questions

Be specific when you ask for help, or the answer will be: read Writing.Com 101.

Trying out a new thing usually comes with a learning curve. At some point, we were all newbies, and who better than a member to explain how to use a site feature?

When seeking a way around the site, it is not helpful to say, "Please help me. I don't know how things work." Whenever I see that blanket question, my auto-pilot response is to refer to "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window.. There are simply too many things to explain on the site. Be specific in your questions.

For instance, if you want to participate in a contest and one of the rules says "Post your word count in your item," and you are not sure what that means, send the contest owner an email asking to clarify that one aspect.

There are writing groups who have the requirement that you have to be able to create a book item for instance. Don't know how to do that, or can't do it due to membership level? Ask the owner of the group if there is a work around, or how to set up your book. By the way, how to set up a book item is also in "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window. "BookOpen in new Window..

As a newbie, you don't have to know a lot, you just have to ask the right questions. *Smile*
