Letter from the editor

Reading can help improve your writing. Make time to read books in your genre, and even outside your usual genres. The more you read the more it stimulates those parts of the brain that help you associate words with images and emotions. Plus, it’s fun, and helps you keep abreast of what’s out there.

Focus on showing the reader what’s happening rather than telling them. What this means is to throw your reader in the moment with the character(s). Don't just talk about what they are feeling, explain just what is going through their mind as it is happening.

Every main character should have a goal, or something they want which helps to define the purpose of the story. They need motivation; why do they want this? Then, the thing that makes a story interesting – conflict. What will get in the way of them achieving their goal? If you can define these three elements, both for your overall story and for each chapter, you’ll be well on your way to creating a great story.

We all begin our romantic writing adventure somewhere. Not sure where to get ideas? Draw on your life experience. Don’t try to write about something you know nothing about, it'll come off awkward and more often than not your reader will be able to tell. If you don't have any romantic experience then it is time to hit the books and or prepare to spend some time researching. Research isn't a bad thing by the way. Research will be helpful to even seasoned writers to make sure they are up on the latest information in their given genre.
