Being Social

I've been a member of a photography website for a few years now, but I never really had many "friends" on the site. My activity was rather sporadic, and I wasn't getting much out of the site. Then, a few months ago, I bought a DSLR camera. All of a sudden, I wanted to take lots of photos and share them with lots of people. Problem was, I still wasn't getting much out of the website.

Then, suddenly I was. I now have followers and I get comments daily! How did I do it? Two simple things changed it all:

1. I upgraded my account. Yep, I paid a website money so I could have more features! Access to more features made me more inclined to use the website, but also paying money motivated me to utilize what they offer. I felt compelled to get my money's worth!

2. I started following and commenting on others' photographs. In connection with this, I also started getting more active in forums and conversations.

These two simple things made a huge difference! Not only am I getting more feedback, but I'm more active in my hobby. How can this relate to Writing.Com?

1. Consider paying for a Basic, Upgraded, Premium or Premium Plus Membership. The features you have access to are well worth it, and having those features will motivate you to write more. Also, paying for a membership will be a motivation in itself! Isn't having a gym membership more motivating than saying you'll work out at home? Same principle applies here. (See this page  Open in new Window. for more info on memberships!)

2. Be more active! Read fellow members' work and send reviews. I guarantee that will get you more feedback than sitting there silently waiting for reviews! Find some contests or discussion forums and join in. There are In & Outs, Polls, Interactive Stories, etc. Lots and lots of ways to interact with other members, even if you don't have much free time!

The thing with a lot of websites, particularly ones focused on improving a craft or hobby, is simply: You get what you give. I know not everyone can afford an upgrade. My first upgrade was gifted to me by one of our wonderful groups that gift memberships. I have never gone back to a free membership in my (almost) ten years here.

If you're serious about wanting to be a better writer and wanting feedback from Writing.Com members, consider the time you put into your involvement and contribution to the site. I guarantee, it's a "get what you give" situation. Give it a try!

Always, keep on writing!

Ask & Answer

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (April 16, 2014)Open in new Window.), discussed duplicate ideas.

Great topic! I have never seen this covered before and it definitely can be an issue. I've heard several members get a little miffed when someone duplicates a popular idea. Good thinking *Thumbsup* *Smile*

Thank you! *Bigsmile*

I haven't run into a contest that was similar to mine. *Laugh* That being said, I might talk to the person, as they might be more successful than me, or doing just as poorly. *Bigsmile*
