The Short End of the Poetry Stick: Some short poetry forms and how to create them.
There are many short poetry forms to play with such as haiku/zappai/senryu, the clerihew, and lanterns, but I’ve covered those in past newsletters. I found a few new ones to share with you today.
Brevette
I discovered this little gem at Shadowpoetry. The award winning poet Emily Romano is the form’s inventor.
MUST HAVES
--Three lines.
--One word per line: Noun, verb, noun.
--Verb is spaced out. Example: running would become r u n n i n g.
COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?
--Meter: Words can be any number of syllables.
--Rhyme or not, it’s up to you.
--Topic and theme.
Essence
Another Shadowpoetry discovery invented by Emily Romano. Check out the link in the source notes for more information about her.
MUST HAVES
--Two lines.
--Meter: Six syllables in each line.
--Rhyme: The two lines rhyme in two ways, both internally and at the end of each line.
COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?
--Topic and theme.
Monostich
A monostich is a one line poem or a single line stanza. This is less of a poetry form and more of a poetry term, but there is nothing stopping you from creating a single line poem and calling it a monostich.
MUST HAVES
--One line. If it’s a one line poem you only have one line so make the most of it, and this advice goes for the title, too—make the most of it.
COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?
--Topic and theme.
--Meter: Your choice.
--Rhyme: If it’s a one line poem there’s nothing to rhyme with unless you create an internal rhyme with the line’s ending.
