Sending a Review
Sometimes when we visit a page for a new contest, we get excited about entering and forget to take a moment and review the page. Contest and activity owners need reviews just as if they were a story needing review. You wouldn't use your general review template, but in the spirit of giving a review, there are plenty of things you can comment on.
Uniqueness - is the contest or activity a fresh, new idea?
Format - is the page nicely formatted and easy to understand?
Rules - are the rules clear and concise?
Entries - does it tell you how to enter?
Even someone experienced in hosting an activity might forget to put some information on their page. Think of yourself as a new member (or if you are) and decide if everything is there that is needed. I like to see helpers like where to find the WDC clock, and a link to a tutorial on how to bitem link. I also like to see the contest owners encourage members to email if they need help. Taking a moment of your time as a host can create a better experience for a first time contestant or someone recently deciding to be brave enough to compete.
Contests and activities do not run themselves, you have to take the time to participate and encourage those interested in what you're offering. Also, you have to take the time to promote the contest ahead of time and encourage page visits. If you don't get a lot of entries, take a moment and ask yourself why. Did you open and not promote? Did you ask for a long piece and then not give enough time to write? Did you leave the contest open too long and members forgot about entering? Was your activity more about trying to raise gift points for yourself than giving back to the community? Look over your page or ask a friend to do so and see what you can improve. Write on!

This month's question: What feature would you like to see more in contests and activities?
Last month's question: How do you feel about auctions and raffles on Writing.com and why?
Quick-Quill comments: Honestly I don't care for auctions and such. I've gone out and looked at them, but my hard earned $ go to earn my dues for my membership. I don't mind buying a raffle ticket or two once in awhile, but auctions are too high priced for the value. I did a couple and offered writing books. When I look at spending 25K, 50K or 100K I equate it to how many reviews I have to do to make it up.
BIG BAD WOLF Feeling Thankful replied: The reason I take part in Auctions and Raffles is this - sometimes you can win prizes for dirt cheep.
I once got some prizes worth 100KGPs, including 3, or was it 4, 10K Awardicons, and another three Merit Badges, for about 40K. Funny thing is, sometimes people will be so moved, they'll throw in something extra. Just a little bit ago, I won a package for a fistful of reviews, some raffle tickets, and a 10K Awardicon. The final bid was 18K. Now, I got the Reviews, and I got the Awardicon, but, it seems that one of my poems was just as special as the one that got the Awardicon, and the person tossed in a Friendship Merit Badge, just because.
So, you never know.
amy-Finally writing a novel. responded: I love to see auctions and raffles on WdC. I have participated in a few and find them fun and a wonderful way to make contact with other members of the site. Making contact is what WdC is all about.
