Happy New Year! I hope your 2015 is off to a great start and you write that romance you've been itching to, but haven't had a chance. May you find inspiration in the little things. If there is a specific topic in the romance genre you'd me or any of the romance/love newsletters to explore, please write in and let us know.
The young adult genre is one that's gained in popularity over the years, but what's the appeal? And just how important is romance to a young adult story?

What is a young adult story? Do you limit who reads or enjoys a young adult tale by saying it's for teenagers or adults in their early 20's? I'd like to think not. A young adult story is one that features teenagers or young adults in a leading heroic role.
Some of the more well known young adult stories include the Twilight series, The Hunger Games, Divergent, the Maze Runner series, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter and the Fault in Our Stars. In fact, all of these stories have made it to the big screen.
What do these stories have in common?
They're resolute
Heroic
Grounded in emotions
Feature teenagers/young adults in the lead roles or main characters
Offer role models
Portray reluctance, uncertainty, loneliness, and believable characters.
The inspire the imagination with interesting settings.
So where does romance fit in?
Sometimes it's subtle, simmering underneath the surface like in the Hunger Games, sometimes it’s the driving force in the story like in the Twilight series. Romance and attraction tend to play a motivating force in the main characters action. For Edward in Twilight, Bella drives away his loneliness. For Katniss in the Hunger Games, it fuels her desire to protect Peeta.
Actual romantic elements tend to be "sweet" in a young adult story. The main characters hold hands, exchange longing glances, or simply enjoy each other's company. The romance is slow, with desire building up over time. The characters might exchange a kiss, but generally don't go further. If there is "sex" it generally happens behind closed doors.
Romance isn't about the driving need to physically consummate the attraction. Romance is about building a relationship that lasts a lifetime. Perhaps that's the appeal of young adults.
Question for you: Do you have a favorite young adult couple? Edward and Bella? Katniss and Peeta? Tris and Four? Percy and Annabeth? Harry and Ginny? I'd love to hear who your favorites are.

Avid Writer ~ God is My Agent I love your writing about Hope. Have a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Quick-Quill I don't do poetry. Hope is what we wish for the world to understand. The hope of all mankind to see the way to a better world or to the world beyond this one. Good NL.
