As a Newbie, I struggled to find my place here. It took a couple of tries. Then I found a group and a friend that put a smile on my face and made me want to be here. I want to be that friend for all of you. So grab a cup of tea and have a nice read as I help you find your ways through the ins and outs of Writing.com.
The best thing about this place... Even Dyslexics like me, that like to tilt at windmills, have a chance for greatness. If you find a grammar or spelling mistake accept my apology now. Spell and Grammar check just doesn't get them all. I will, on occasion, use this space to explain things I have learned to both help solidify them in my mind and to help others that might struggle with it as well. Homeschooling my kids taught me that I learn best when teaching. |

So it's finally over... 2014 that is. I don't know about all of you but it was a horrible year for accomplishing all those goals I set for myself in My Dear Me Letter. Then again, maybe I forgot to enter the contest last January and that's why I was such a bad year. Either way, I didn't accomplish much.
I started every month with the intent of writing a short story I could get someone to help me edit with the intent of submitting it for publication. Every month ended with me smacking myself in the head and saying, "Do you know what I forgot to do, again?"
My husband, Clanbear took to shaking his head at me. He knows I want a tiny house and it is my intent to start getting items published so that the extra money I bring in can go toward my tiny house dream. My problem is, I still have three kids to young to move out and the youngest won't be old enough for another 6 years. 6 years is a long time to plan for something when your a, "fly by the seat of your pants" kind of person.
The good news is, that with the end of 2014, we move into a whole new year. If my father was still with us he would follow that up with, "Yeah a whole new year to not get anything you want to do done."
Hey, I haven't given up on making Bear that sweater I started almost eight years ago now. I just got distracted, but I digress.
What I am trying to say, is its a whole new year to embrace a whole new set of challenges, successes, joys and sorrows. Now is the time to finish up any stories you've been working on, come up with new fresh ideas to keep you going and never forget...
We want to read them!
So for all of you who are waiting to post something intent on the idea that it has to be perfect, or because your not sure what exactly you want to say, know your not alone. Even those of us who have been here forever find ourselves procrastinating. Writing takes a lot of self discipline. For every writer that has no problem with self discipline there are at least two more that think about that quote from Hemingway about how writing isn't hard it just requires you set down at your typewriter and bleed, and decide we will bleed tomorrow.
So for 2015 maybe we can all try to stop putting off the bloodletting until tomorrow and try to post something new.
The good news for all of us is The Run-on King PDG Member is back! So without further ado...

The Newbie Corner or Writing ML Tip of the Month
You know as much as I dislike promoting the different accounts for several reasons. One, it's not my place to advertise or miss-advertize the website. Two, I really don't believe in obtrusive advertising. My problem is the things I want to show you are account specific is why the big deal. These Writing ML tips all work for upgraded accounts and higher, just so you know.
Now on with our topic for this week "embedding." Did you know you can embed all these different items in your static items, newsfeeds, and e-mails?
Embed a Static or Webpage Item: The command is {insert:#######} The # equals your static id number.
Embed an Image: This command is {image:#######}. Note: There is a step you have to do first before this command can work. You have to create a graphic using the picture or image you want to insert. When you create it and save it. It will have a WDC id # that you can now use in the # place.
Embed an Image (with scaling): The command is {image:#######-50%} This scales the image from 400 X 400 to 200 X 200 the smaller the number the smaller the picture. It starts at 100% and goes to 1% so you can play with it for that great artistic look you want in your item your designing.
Embed a Poll: The command is {poll:#######}. The # are the poll's Id number you get from the poll you created and saved in your portfolio.
Embed Audio: It doesn't state this in the help section but this is a function of premium accounts. This refers to music you create and store on the site or voice recording for instructions you created. This is a real audio sound bite. Not a YouTube video. The Command is {audio:#######} (basic) The other is embed audio with time {t-audio:#######}
Embed a YouTube Video: You see us do this all the time in the newsfeed or in our Portfolios. You are limited to only Books or the newsfeed with this command. A blog is a book. an example would be: {embed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkYZ6rbPU2M}
Embed an Awardicon: You see this in message bases or the Newsfeed. You will not see it in the e-mail from a friend. You will see only the notification you had one given to you. The command is {award:#######}You will have to bring up the list of your awards by clicking on the number behind your name. Find the award you want to show off and look under it and it will have the id number to use. You are only allowed to display your own awards.
Embed a Merit Badge: You see this in message bases or the Newsfeed. You will not see it in the e-mail from a friend. You will see only the notification you had one given to you. The command is {badge:#######}. You will have to bring up the list of your merit badges by clicking on the number behind your name. Then find the merit badge you want to show off and look under it and it will have the id number to use. You are only allowed to display your own merit badges.
If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me anytime The Run-on King PDG Member . Until next time.

Comments About My Last Newsletter
"The claims made for WDC tend to emphasize its diverse features: contests, NANO, several genre of fiction, forums (fora?, newsletters, and more. But WDC's attractions are not only wide. They also are deep. If a subscriber loves poetry, for example, but has no interest in contests, NANO, or adventure fiction, the poetry lover should feel free to enjoy the poetry and not, in his view, waste time on uninteresting features of WDC. When I go to the grocery store I spend no time at all looking over the stock of Kale. But I like that store anyway." Doug Rainbow
Doug, You're absolutely right. Only visit those things that interest you. However, try not to limit yourself to just that. Even if you usually write sonnets, there is nothing to stop you from enjoying a steampunk story and perhaps writing a steampunk themed sonnet. The abundance of variety is here to help you expand your knowledge and limits, giving you a greater palate to use to color your world. Think small, if you need to, but never inside the box. |
